Barrel Mods

Have a friend with a .30-30 Encore Rifle Barrel. I am looking for a .30-30 Encore Pistol Barrel.
Can the Rifle Barrel be shortened and still be accurate? I know the hole locations for the forearm are different, but I can deal with that.

It is my opinion that cutting a rifle barrel down is not a good idea. The bore may not be centered. Ed's Contenders has a New 30-30 AL Encore 15" TB,Matte, $245.

If a Rifle/carbine barrel is cut off to pistol lenght and the bore is off center it was off center to begine with.
 I have a .223 carbine barrel I had cut down to 16 1/4 inch so my 11 year old daughter could handle the firearm easier. It worked well before the operation and works well now both as a pistol and as a carbine.

T/C has a craftsman that does nothing but straighten the barrels by bumping them. Yes,all barrels are not centered all the length of the barrel. That is the way it is.The biggest reason not to cut off barrels is you lose the life time warranty. The warranty is worth about one third of the value of the barrel. Also, most buyers do not want some one elses home work making a cut off barrel harder to resale.

I once had my smith cut off a 21" 30-30 Contender barrel down to 16.25".  When I picked it up the smith said that I'd better take a good look at the muzzle.  Well it was off center by quite a lot.  So much so that he couldn't crown it.  I just took it home and laid it aside and forgot about it.  One day I came across it while getting ready to go shoot.  Having a spare pistol scope handy, I decided to see just how bad the thing really was.  Well, long story short, it's still in my collection and remains today one of my most accurate barrels.  Looks funny as h__l, but shoots good.  So, you never know.  But as tlyne pointed out I'm sure I have no warranty with T/C, and I don't blame them for that.  ;) Walt
