I use one of two types both of which work well:

1.  An ammo wallet on my belt.  The disadvantage is that if you need a second shot, the Velcro makes a bit of noise when you open it.
2.  An ammo holder that fits with elastic over the buttstock.  The disadvantage with this is that it does move under recoil after a few shots (at least with a 7mm Rem. Mag.) but you'll only need 1 or 2 shots anyway.

I would add to the list by Grumulkin:

3. An ammo holder that fits with an elastic around your wrist. Buy more than one as the elastic may stretch over time with the possibility of loosing a cartridge. The brand I have holds 5 or 6 cartridges and is the one I rely on most.

Ammo carrier that stretches over the buttstock. If you take a hole punch and punch a hole in it to fit around the sling post it won't move under recoil.

I use the rubber one that slips over the barrel and holds two shells. It's very convenient. The only thing is that the shells fit very tightly in it  so when I get in the stand I usually pull one partially out in case I need a quick reload.

Thank you guys....
I first bought the GunMate holder that suppose the fit over the stock...but had a heck of a time getting the elastic band over the stock. Went to Walmart and saw they had the Fieldline ammo pouch (opens like the wallet) with elastic band on the back that slips over the stock...I used it....but slow getting extra shells..

Thanks for the other ideas....Gents..I was wondering how the wrist holder works and the one that slides over the barrel......

pdh,

The easiest way to get it over the stock is remove the stock and slide it over from the grip side first. Pain in the butt, but if you are going to leave it on an entire season, no problem.

I put a fold out ammo wallet on my belt.  As far as worrying about a second shot the velcro is not a worry. Mine has a clip on it no velcro. Plus I make sure the first shot counts or I dont take it.

I use both the wrist holder and the holder that slips over the barrel.  The one over the barrel works well, but when I put it on it did change the POI.  A quick adjustment of the scope and I was back in business.  The wrist holder is the best because it offers the most flexibility.  It works with all my rifles and my pistols no matter what caliber they are.

Not to hijack the thread but none of the slip on buttstock ammo holders seem to work for lefties. Has anyone found one that does?

Where can I find the wrist ammo hold or the one that fits over the barrel?

I purchased the slip on front stock holder at a local sport shop.  I found that it also gives an additional padding to the stock when shooting from box stand rest.  I also had 2 ammo loops sewed on my jacket's left upper sleeve and on the left front (where a chest pocket would go).  I found that both were easy to quickly access when reloading.  I do not use both at a time, I found that one works better in a climber and the other at other times.  I always use the front stock mounted holder.  I used the rear stock mounted holder, but really did not care for it to much and took it off.  I want to say that I paid around $20 for the front stock holder, $25 for the rear stock holder.  I have seen the wrist mounted holder on ebay for around $15-$20.

I'm partial to the buttstock holder, and yes they are a pain to put on and take off. But I never forget my ammo! I have seen leather lace-on holders, and may look into one of those. I've also used the "buddy-lock" holders with my pack. Puts the ammo right on my left chest.

What's the difference between a left and right ammo holder? Can the holder just be switched to the other side for shooting lefty?
