CHRISTMAS WISH LIST HELP
« on: December 07, 2007, 08:05:00 AM »
hi, im 16 and I want to ask for an NEF handi rifle in 22-250 caliber and i know this is a good caliber and i've read lots of good things about the single shot gun but i have also read about accuracy problems with . the bigger calibers,
i was just wondering if this happens with the smaller calibers like the 22-250 or is it just the bigger calibers or just some general thoughts on the gun and if i should ask for one.
umm what kind of scope should i get and also should i get some win. supreme ammo for it?

i wonder if Santa will bring me some ammo to?

thanks jpbear  ;)

jp,
all handi's can be good shooters, some have reputations for better accuracy then others, but the guy behind the trigger matters too.
another thing to take into account, what are you going to be doing with the rifle ? hunt, what type ? target ?

remember, the more people you ask, the more different asnwers you are gonna get. having said that, you cant get better adivce on Handi's then from some of the more experienced guys here.

depending on what you are using it for, I think you will find many more of the 204's that are good shooters.  Just my observations from this board over time.  I am probably a little biased too.  I love the 204.  Nothing like starting young to make a TRUE addiction!  Enjoy

I would suggest you tell the folks what use you plan to put the gun to so they can better advise you regarding the scope and perhaps even the chambering. As a for instance if it will be a deer hunting gun that's definitely not the best chambering to ask for. If it's for varmints and/or predators it's an excellent choice as are the .204 Ruger mentioned or the .223 Remington.

Of those ammo for the .223 is by far cheaper and thus you get to shoot more for the same money. Nothing beats the .22LR tho for getting to shoot a lot for a little money so if punching holes in paper is the primary use it might be a wise choice.

I'm planning on using it on coyotes and i didn't know if the 204. ruger was to light and i think the 22-250 ammo is more available to me
but i already have a 270win. and i was going to just use that but its to high grain and the fields i want to hunt are just too long for my 12. Ga to go so i want to get something i can hunt coyotes exclusively with

Big welcome to GBO to you jpbar!!The 22-250 is a good one,I got one in a bolt action.Don't over look the 223 as I have a handi in it,got the barrel from darat in fact, and I grab it for 90% of my varninting now, cheap to shoot and accurate to boot.

Welcome jpbar to GBO's forums. Like a lot of people on this site, I, too, hunt coyotes. I use a .243 but there are several other caliber choices that are just as good for putting them down. Are you wanting to save the pelts? This has a big impact on what caliber you choose and what bullet you will use. I don't save pelts so my .243 and any of the loads I shoot through it work for me. Other good choices would be the .204, the .22-250, and the .223. I use my Handi in .223 when I decide to do something different and leave the .243 at home. The Handi's in .204 and .223 calibers have a pretty good reputation here for being accurate.

As far as a scope goes, look for a lower powered scope with a wide FOV at the distances you will be taking shots at. This is my personal opinion as others might feel more power is necessary for the type of hunting they do. You don't have to spend a lot of money for a scope that will serve you well coyote hunting. The Mueller's are a pretty good choice.

Good luck and good hunting...

Welcome aboard jpbar!! ;) You have a Mueller dealer in Canada, Phil's website doesn't appear to be working right now, but he's a regular on RFC.  ;)

jpbar, welcome to gbo, i am gald to see a young man getting into hunting coyotes, i have been hunting coyotes for over 30 years, have killed 100's of them, you buy what gun you think is right for you, if it was me i would buy a larger cal., so you can also deer hunt with the same rifle, good luck on the coyote hunting.

jpbar ...

If you are going coyote hunting, the last thing you want to do is "gloss up" anything. The finish that comes on the Handi's leaves something to be desired for some but it will work just fine for hunting yotes. This is one smart predator with very keen senses.

The Tasco scope is a good place to start, especially as a gift.  A cheap scope you can shoot is better than looking down a naked barrel.  You can save up for something else you want and if you use your $ you'll take better care of it.

Jpbar,
I have a 6-24X42mm Tasco mil dot on my 223 bull barrel Handi.
It's not a Luepold, or a Ziess, or a Saworski, but it only ran
$76.10 including shipping. It has pretty good glass. Definitely
worth the money. Check it out.
