Black powder vs Pyrodex RS
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:29:20 PM »
I want to try using some pyrodex this year for deer hunting. I use 90grs of 2f black powder, from what I understand, I keep my powder measure the same for pyrodex RS because it goes by volume and not weight compared to black powder.....? Is this correct?
so basically my measure is set at 90gr,....I just fill it up with pyrodex to my 90 mark and I should be fine?right? No high pressure etc.....?
 thanks for your help,
 Jeff

You are correct, set your powder measure at 90 and fill it up. Then you will find out if yours will shoot it or you will have go down or up in 5 gr. increments.

In Idaho you can't buy black over the counter. If I can't get it over the counter I don't want it. Ron

Do what I did......Buy in quantity (25 pounds) and save almost HALF the cost of retail. If you don't need 25 pounds yourself have a couple buddies go in on it with you.
I think that I just paid about 11.50 per pound delivered for Goex in July and I got 25 pounds in last January.

Ya just can't beat that even if you have to put up some cash now it will only save you a lot later as the prices are going to keep going up.

gooser...Better is a relative term...The problem with using substitute black powder in a traditional muzzleloader is that they have a higher ignition temperature...

Pyrodex came out in the 70s...It was developed so it didn't have to be stored in a fire proof safe, and there weren't as many shipping regulations as well, that's why many stores won't carry real bp...They market Pyrodex and other subs as being cleaner and easier to clean...

I don't know what type of gun you are shooting, but Pryodex is harder to ignite than Goex and 777 is harder yet, so reliability goes down...

I'm lucky, I live within a hour and a half of a Goex distributor and there is a good BBQ place on the way... :) :D

I paid $11.50 a pound this past spring for a pound of Goex...777 runs about $20 bucks and Pryodex about $15 around here...

Pyrodex was my main powder for a number of years, then I tried 777 and ended up with a nasty spot in my barrel. The spot was only a few inches long right above where the patched ball sits, and it took a bunch of scrubbing to get clean. Then I started shooting a flinter and switched to Graff's 3f real black powder. The clean up was so much faster than with either sub that I hope I never have to use them again. I will just stock up when I can get it.

I tried the T7 and did a lot of testing. It is VERY fast powder but I didn't like it because of the "crud ring" and it was not as accurate in my 50's. A friend of mine shot some out of his 50 White Mountain Carbine. He used, I think  80 or 85 grains. He got over 1500 feet per second with a 410 gr bullet out of a 21" barrel. Well he did it three times, then the stock cracked.  I called it the mares leg because it kicked so bad.
For me to get to Bear river area would be a 4 hour one way drive Cap! ;D  To order 25 pounds will put me on the homeland security watch list. No thanks, I will continue to get sub 2" groups at 100 yards with peep sights and conicals using Pyrodex RS in my 50's  and Pyrodex P in my .45
One thing about this site and others like it is there is a lot of reading in the archives. A guy doesn't  need magazines any more. everything a guy needs for info and stories is out there basically for free. The biggest draw back to these sites is a guy hears what other guys are doing and soon he ends up with new guns and stuff. Oh well I guess I could waste money on retirement.  Ron

You won't end up on a watch list because you bought some black powder.

You an individual can have up to 50 pounds of black powder in your home. Its your right and its the law.

Like I said split it with a couple of guys and it won't cost you so much and an added bonus is that you do not have to drive anywhere to get it (unless you need to eat those BBQ ribs on the way).

Go to www. powderinc.com to see what the prices are.

I used to read anow defunct message board called Blackpowder shooters.  Lots of knowledgeable posters including Bill Knight.  Their consensus was pyrodex sucks because it loses power over time especially if not carefully stored in a cool dry place.  Its other downfall was claimed to be its negative metalurgical effects on barrel steel.  Something to do with the chlorine in pyrodex causing damage to crystalline structure.  Anyway I've been using it in my Renegade for 20 years now and the gun shoots about the same as it always has.
That's damn good too.  I clean after every shooting session with hot water then dry and soak  bore with WD 40 (another no no) remove the WD and apply bore butter liberally while barrel is still very warm.  The bore looks shiny and and smooth as does the outside of the gun.  I've had 5 year old Pyro RS shoot the same velocity and accuracy as new.  It seems to have less fouling than real black which I've also tried.   Just annecdotal evidence though.
