Rechambering 25-06
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:59:56 PM »
Has anyone re-chambered a .25-06 Ultra to .257 Weatherby Mag?

If so, how have results been?

Thanks

I am surprised Quick hasn't already replied to this. You can't do magnums on the current sb-2 frame the case head thrust is to great for the Frame. There is some evidence that there will be Magnum Handi' s in 2008  but for now it is a no go

Welcome to GBO!  ;)  Mac and I have discussed the 257Wby mag rechamber with Wayne York who has done several rechambers for us, it would be questionable at best. You'd be better off waiting for the new magnum framed 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag next year. There's no doubt they'll be available, when is the only question, I should find out Monday, they were supposed to have a meeting today on next year's schedule, they're already listed at distributors, they'll retail for about $290 or so, will be 26" stainless.

the .25-06 isn't really that far behind the .257 weatherby.   is it really worth it to hit that barrel with more powder and more pressure, burning away a little bit of the steel each(?) time with all that heat, to get such minimal extra results?    the .25-06 is already a Long-Range proposition.    isn't that enough?

just some personal opinion,

I gotta agree with Quick & SS on re chambering the 25-06 to the Weatherby for the most part...You will gain 100-200 fps over most bullets...but...the wear & tear & strain on a Handi would be too much for it I am afraid...Now...when the magnum frames become available for it..and if they come in a 25 caliber barrel at some point...then it would make more sense to me to go that route then...I wanted one for a long long long time in a Handi...but...will wait till it will work better...Then...not only will I have a 257 Weatherby...but a 270 Weatherby as well... ;D In the mean time...if you already have a 25-06 Handi...look at using some H1000 and Retumbo...you will be amazed at the velocities you can get with careful hand loading...out of the 26" barrel...Slow powders...long barrels =better velocities... ;)
