sights for accusport bisley
« on: December 08, 2007, 03:03:46 AM »
I have a 357 accusport bisley.  I wasn't very happy with it's accuracy.  At 25 yards off bags I was getting 2 to 3 inch groups, after quite a bit of shooting.  I put on a 2 power scope with a clamp on mount just to see if it would shoot or the problem was me.  It was definitely me.  It easily shoots under an inch at 25 yards with several loads.  Just wondering what sights are out there that will allow me to shoot more accurately than the big square ones that come with it.  Also are there any disadvantages to them in the field.  I also have a 44 accusport that I would change sights on if there are better ones.

An example of an undercut front sight would be the one on a Ruger Target 22 Auto.  While a good idea for target work, extreme examples will "eat up" your holster while accumulating globs of leather, etc.  Various custom pistolsmiths sell what they consider to be the ultimate front sight and often offer explanations.   I've heard that a previous poster, Ken ONeill, produces a really good one.  You have to consider if the pistol is going to be carried in a holster and choose accordingly.

Personally, I'd go with a finely serrated Patridge or Improved Ramp front blade and the BOWEN Target adjustable rear sight.  The BOWEN gives a sight picture similar to the BOMAR rear sight that was THE sight for IPSC and target shooters prior to all the optical types.  There is a BOWEN on my favorite stainless Super Black Hawk, but I didn't replace the factory front.  I wish I had gotten something different--and better now.  Jim Stroh (ALPHA PRECISION) did his usual excellent job on "blue printing" the Ruger after about 15-to-20,000 rounds and it will do considerably better than I can shoot it.

Mr. Stroh is going to be doing some work for me, on my 44 Accu Sport among others.  You have reminded me that a BOWEN sight  and appropriate front blade replacement would be money well spent.  If you don't have it, consider buying Hamilton Bowen's book, THE CUSTOM REVOLVER.  You will find it an education and well worth the $40+; and he will sign them--another plus.
When they said Sharps, I always thought BIG 50!

Try a gold bead front, and a "V" notch rear sight blade.

I put the Ruger Redhawk GVBR upgrade kit on a friends Ruger Single-six, and it worked great for our old eyes.
(I ordered the "V" notch rear from Ruger, (#HG7201 for $4) and used a  (Brownells #579-502-922 for $12) Marble 3/32" gold bead for the front.)

Here is an article describing the process, and part numbers....but I don't thing Brownells still sells the Ruger sights as a kit anymore, just Smith/Wesson rears.

Helped my buddy a lot for hunting, but at the inside range I think we needed to go to the Marbles "Ivory" bead.
(The gold picks up light great outside for "Tree rats"!)

Check your local gunstore, or ask a friend (that has the "V" notch on his Redhawk) to try it out, and you will see a big difference between this and the square rear sight.

Hope this helps.

Bowen Roughcountry rear sight and Weigan Combat front with interchangeable inserts. I really like the green fiber-optic.

I sounds like your main problem is the trigger, not the sights
Have someone do a trigger job on your gun and I'd bet it will shoot just fine.

I am very pleased with the Bowen Target rear sight and the Clements front blade cut at .010" width on my 45 Colt Acusport below. That said I have also had great service from Millett's rear sight for a number of years.

boxhead has got the set up. Its a sight set up that i use on most of my adjustable sighted guns.  Make sure like he said you spec out a .10 blade from dave when you order it. Another nice touch is to have him put a couple gold bars on the blade.
