7mm STW
« on: December 08, 2007, 12:24:33 PM »
Who would be the best deal on a re-chamber from 280 REM to 7mm STW?  SSK says $75 but I have not called them yet to see if the STW was part of that deal.

I have some doubts if the Encore could/should be rechambered to the 7mm STW.  SSK would be my choice for this job; if JD says it could be done safely, then I would believe it.

What would be your main concern about the 7mm STW?

Encores are made to take high pressure cartridges only if the cartridge diameter is less that a given amount.  The larger the case diameter, the lower the pressure has to be.  The 416 Rigby can be chambered in an Encore only because the pressure is relatively low.  For instance, some custom barrel makers will not chamber most of the the Weatherby cartridge line or the "short magnums" because of pressure and/or case diameter concerns.  I don't know exactly where the 7mm STW fits in but J. D. Jones of SSK Industries could certainly tell you.

J. D. Jones answers e-mails fairly fast and the work SSK Industries has done for me has been done promptly and is of excellent quality.

If a 7mm STW isn't possible, a 7mm Remington Magnum certainly is and should get you almost as good velocity.

Well, actually, the 7mm STW is the only choice I have.  You see, some "gunsmith" reamed a 280AI chamber in about 0.050" too far and now the 7mm Rem Mag and 7mm Weatherby Mag will not clean-up the chamber.  And because the chamber is too deep the brass stretches too much and separates.  I suppose that the brass could be made to work by pulling the bullets and re-seating them so the base of the case is flush with the end of the chamber.  Would that make the new round a 280AI Improved?

Was the barrel a 280 rem to sart out with? If so the gunsmith did the only thing he could do. To make an AI cartride fom a donor barrel that is of the unimproved version. A gunsmith will set the barrel back one thread on a bolt action so the AI reamer cleans up the parent chamber. In single shots like the Encore or the Handi you can have an improved cartridge made but not a true AI. I'd say fireform your brass and have fun with your 280 improved.

Not correct.  The Ackley Improved was designed from the beginning to fire both the parent cartridge and the improved cartridge.  It is suppose to head space on the shoulder at the neck.  The reamer would have definitely cleaned the parent chamber without going past the parent shoulder at the neck length.  The shoulder at the neck measurement is about 0.050" too long as is the shoulder at the body.  He ran the reamer in too far.  SSK Industries has no problem with re-reaming chambers in Contender and Encore barrels or MGM or Bullberry.  It was a mistake, plain and simple.  Now I have to deal with it as a real wildcat or have it reamed to 7mm STW.

You can easily deal with the 280 Improved-Improved chamber by forming a false shoulder before fire forming, I have a 280 Imp-Imp H&R Ultra, my gunsmith told me up front that due to the fact that break barrels can't be set back as a threaded barrel can, the end result wouldn't be an Ackely, but an Improved-Improved chamber. He does them all the time for 35 Whelen bolt gun owners in Alaska, just reams em to Improved without the barrel being set back, factory ammo can't be fired in them, but the case does provide more capacity, 9grs more water in mine over a Nosler Custom 280 Improved round, and like you said, about .050" headspace.

The Encore barrel should be fine if you do the fire forming after forming the false shoulder to head space on to begin with so the brass doesn't stretch due to the excessive headspace involved from the rechamber, lots cheaper than a new barrel or another rechamber, unless you really want the 7STW which has merit too. ;)

Billy:

I am not a machinist or a gunsmith so my musings may be suspect.  I still think he could have stopped at 2.199 neck/shoulder,  My fired cases measure 2.254 neck/shoulder.  What do I know?!?

Oh, and by the way, my favorite 3 beers are the same as your favorite 3.     A cold one, the next one, and a free one.

Quickdtoo:

Yeah I would like a 7STW but, will learn this barrel.  I'm guessing that "regular" 280AI dies will do the trick?

That's what I use, bought a Redding 280 Impr 40º body die and an RCBS 280 Impr neck size set, neck size until the cases need to have the shoulder set back, then use the body die.  I use Nosler Custom brass cuz I like properly head stamped brass, they have it in seconds sometimes which saves a bit of money, it ain't cheap and has gone up like all brass. :'(

Bud light, Busch light or Mich Golden light. You should be able to get very close to 7mm rem mag velocity with careful handloads with thise rifle.

Ah yes, I see the light - It's just in another mans glass. :D

I really don't need the extra velocity, whatever little bit the 280AI Imp provides, I just like to shoot through the animal I'm hunting.  At any angle.  The 7mm STW still may happen.  We'll see how Christmas goes.

Billy, please stop by, I'll provide some venison chili to go with your cold "light" beer.
