308 long neck
« on: December 09, 2007, 08:35:27 AM »
A while back on another site I read about a fellow who was taking his .308 and setting it up as a cast bullet gun. He took 8mm Mauser brass and ran it into a .308 dies which gives you a long neck .308. He then took a throating reamer and lengthened his rifles throat to take the new round. The reason for this was to have a case that would better hold lead bullets .
My question: Would this offer anything more than a 30-30 for lead bullet accuracy?  It would be an easy conversion to do on a Handi. And you cold still use  factory .308, you'd just have a long free bore

Several things would be different.

First, the case capacity would be different - so using a full-case of something (to eliminate the varialbe of powder position) would use a different powder - for better or worse.

Second, the shoulder would be different - generally the sharp shouldered cases don't stretch as much as would something like the 30-06.

Third, the case walls would be a little heavier with the 308-LN.

Fourth, in this case the neck/throat dimensions were custom matched - good if one plans it right vs. what you get from off-the-shelf.

A throat is not a chamber. If you have to do it, use a "necking reamer", not a throater.

My real question is; would this offer anything more than I could get with a 30-30? Velocity aside.
