Need help on load for 270 win?
« on: June 23, 2003, 04:40:51 PM »
New to Tc pisols. How would one start to test loads for the 15 inch 270 Win? Do you use the rifle data and reduce it? By how much?  Thanks, Any help would be appreciated  <:)

I was told to use the same data for rifles as the Encore so that is what I am doing.  I am still working up loads when I have time, but what worked well in mine as an endpoint(for now) was 48.3g of 4064 under a 130gr SST.  If you use it as a reference please be sure and work up to it to look for stress, but I believe it is under max anyways.  Good luck and please be sure and let me know if you come up with something else in a different configuration.  Stay safe.  Regards,

Matt

No I haven't as I just got it not too long ago.  I will do it this winter though.  The guy I bought it off of claimed to have shot and killed a buck at 189 yards with it.  And I'd say if you're steady enough you can take one much farther out with it.  You know, I had thought there would be a lot more recoil for such a caliber, but there isn't it.  Oh, do you have the latest Nosler reloading guide?  I do, so if you need a reference for something let me know.  Regards,

Matt

Ok Thanks. I'm waiting on my barrel to arrive. I love the 270 in a rifle, a deer stopper. I've put together some 130 BT , 140 Bt and 160 Partion nosler for a test. Just need barrel to set OAL. How about the noise? Does it blow the wax out. I do have good ear plugs.. HaHa.. Thanks Dennis <:)

Again, I was surprised that the noise wasn't louder then it is.  It isn't that bad, but I've only shot it twice without muffs.  I don't plan to do it again until season too.  My OAL on one of the SST is 3.255.  I have another group that is 3.270 and another 3.264. The 3.255 shot the best.

What is your chamber OAL?  I've  read where some people are setting these .035 to .040 off the lands?  How much is your best one off the lands??  <:)

Smiley call Sierra Bullets at 1 800 223 8799 and ask them to email you the information they have on the 270 in a single shot  pistols. I did it gave me a starting point . I have not loaded any bullets larger than a 110 grain yet .I'm trying to find a good varmit load right now.The best groups so far have been with H4895 and Sierra 110 grain bullets not having much luck with the 90 grainers. Hope this helps some.

It all helps. Do you know what twist the Tc barrels are? What you doing with the 110; varmits? That should make it easy to shoot! Not much recoil.. <:)

Smiley according to the info Sierra sent me the twist should be 1x10".The recoil with the lighter bullets is somewhat lighter.Iplan to shoot some groundhogs and coyotes with these loads. The 110's I think I will try them on a deer this fall.

Pick up a copy of Hornady's 5Th edition reloading manual.  It lists load data for the 270 in the 15" Encore for several bullet weights.  The 5Th edition is two books and a little more expensive, but well worth the extra money.

Good Luck

Smiley, did you ever measure your OAL?  I still haven't done mine yet. I'm afraid to say what I think it was.  I'm still just about as new as you can get to reloading so I probably shouldn't have said anything to begin with, but the powder and bullet does work well though.  I'll let the pros handle it until I get better.  Take care.

:D  howdy fellers, havn't tried a .270 in the short barrels yet but imr4350 with sierra 140gr hollow point bt worked great in a rifle i had. the 140gr hp may be too hard to get expansion in handguns though. a call or mail to sierra techs would tell the story. they are very helpful in that respect. 8)

Expansion
« Reply #15 on: June 29, 2003, 03:06:42 AM »
Yes I measured the barrel and 3 different bullets.  Made up 160 , 140 and 130. Speaking of expansion. They seem to shoot well at 50 yards anyway.. does anyone know about the partion (nosler). Will it perform well in the 15 inch barrel?? <:)  Thanks

When I talked to Nosler about the min Vel for their bullets he said they were designed to expand down to 1700 fps. I have done some tests with my 7-08 with the 160P @ 2450 @ 100yds. and they look picture perfect. I'll post the rest of my findings when I'm finished.
