Author Topic: .480 Raging Bull 5" barrel? (Read 699 times)

I'm curious if anyone here has had experience with this revolver, or the .454 in the same barrel length? I'm considering buying one of these and would like to know how it compares to the longer barrel models. I've fired the 8.375" model on several occasions and find it to be manageable, and am intersted in the difference between the two. I'm not going to buy a Super Redhawk, no matter how many times it is suggested. I have nothing against the SRH, it just doesn't fit what I want without extensive modifications.

unbelieveable difference in the two. with the integral expansion chamber, it brings your actual barrel length to 3.7 (approximate) inches and with the casull, it is nasty. i own a 6.5 (actually a 5.25 with the expansion chamber) and it is alot easier on the shooter. i would advise against the 5 inch barrel; unless you dont like yourself.

Thanks for the advice. Now I'm going to have to read "Love Yourself" again, and go buy a 6.5" version. I'd have to imagine that the ballistics suffer quite a bit when you reduce the barrel to that length. It would be nice to have the shorter revolver, but it's worth nothing if it's so punishing that you don't practice with it.

I have shot the 5" 454 and the 5" 480. ( I own the 6 1/2 454) I don't mind the 480, but the 454 was a bit heavy. I thought it was like the 454 with the 6 1/2. It also had a scope for a little extra weight... Try to shoot them, and let us know what you get/experience.

Unfortunatley, I don't think I'll have the opportunity to fire the 5" examples unless I buy one. I'd like to try them all!:) I feel that the difference you felt between the two rounds, provided you where using factory or factory equivalent loads, would be the relative weakness of the factory loading for the .480. My intent for the round is a belt gun that I can fire the 400 +/- gr loads in, which I'm sure will bring the recoil level up to that of the .454 when similarly loaded. The .454 might still be a little sharper, but I'm thinking the difference would be almost undetectable. I'd really wish I could fire the 5" and 6.5" on the same day, with my chrono at the ready. But as the saying goes "You can wish in one hand and deficate in the other, see which one gets full first"

Factory ammo? Yes indeed it was. That is a good point that I did not think of when i replied. My 6 1/2 is totable enough for me; I think it is more pleasing to the eye with ascope on too... Good luck, and let us know what you decide!
