12 ga Pardner Weight at 5.5 pounds- Surprised !
« on: December 10, 2007, 03:41:14 AM »
I thought it felt kind of light so I put it on scales graduated  to 1/4 pound
increments and was not expecting to find such a light weight.
It was made in 1998 and has the regular 24 or 26 in barrel on it.

Btw, do you measure barrel length from the firing pin or from
the front of the cartridge chamber ?

Yeppers,  that's what makes 'em a great "walkin' around the woods" gun.  ;) And all the power of any other 12ga.  What's not to like about that. ;D

Great walking around guns is right.  I had the older version - the H&R Topper - with a 28" barrel.  It was good with standard shells but the recoil with slugs rough and then I made the mistake of shooting 3 inch 00 buck.

I had the same rude awakening when I tried 2.75" slugs in my Pardner! But Cookieman sure is right -- why should I lug around my 8-pound 870, when I'm only shooting trap loads at wabbits? I never carry any other shotgun these days.

Question on recoil

Am I to assume that recoil is only related to powder charge and projectile weight?
If so a one ounce slug or buckshot should have the same recoil as one ounce of birdshot. Assuming the powder charges are the same

I'm talking about "raw"recoil and not felt recoil which is affected by gun weight and action.

montveil: You're pretty darn close to it. Most birdshot loads aren't loaded to the maximum velocity and pressure that slug and buck loads commonly develop. You don't need maximum velocity to kill a grouse, or even a pheasant. Slug loads are usually maxed out to make them as rifle-like as possible -- lethal out to about 100 yards, much more with the new sabot rounds. So a one-ounce load of #8 shot in a light bird-hunting load will recoil a lot less that a one-ounce slug load that is loaded to the highest velocity that doesn't exceed maximum safe pressure.

My old Model 58 12 gauge with 28 inch modified barrel was 5.5 lbs also.  5 lbs 8 oz.  Used to go to Western Auto to find those 1 oz Revelation shells.  Much easier on the shoulder.
