Last Day Deer Hunt
« on: December 10, 2007, 05:30:01 AM »
Really enjoyed my hunt yesterday morning.  Was slowly stalking and glassing from a hillside here in Western New York.  Deer known to bed this area and I was trying to spot them first.  Had my binos down for a few minutes just looking around and noticed a spot with ears way off in the distance with my naked eye.  Raised my binos and sure enough a doe bedded down in the bowl facing me from nearly 130 yards.  If I had a rifle I could have taken her then, but had my Freedom Arms.

SO cool.  I laid down in the 10" of snow and starting on a belly crawl straight towards her.  The closer I got the more deer I saw bedded there.  Couldn't believe they did not see me so I kept crawling for quite a while...cleaning the snow out of my binos...and taking a look to see if I had been spotted.  When I got to something like 80 yards I was convinced I could not get any closer without getting burned.  I stopped and thought for a while and decided to spin around to where I could take a sitting position instead of prone.  Figured I would mouth bleat at them to get them to stand so I could try and get a clear shot at one.

When I tried to bring my legs around the closest doe facing right at me spotted me.  She stood up and I panicked slowly!  Get the gun up...looks like about 75-80 yards.  Managing to keep on her chest so I should be able to shoot...BANG!  Deer get up from all over the bottom.  All took off running to my right...her included.  All 8 of them bunched up and ran the length of the bottom and then turned up the hill and ran over the top and gone.  I kept waiting for one to break off and drop, but no such luck.  I honestly laughed at myself for missing.  Went back along my trail gathering discarded gear and then headed down to the bedding area for a look see to trail them out and confirm my miss.

Got down to the first bed and looked off in the direction they ran.  HEY!  What is that brown spot?  WooHoo!  There she is!!  Perfect shot right into the chest cavity over the front leg exiting just behind the off leg as she was turned slightly facing me.  She went about 40 or 50 feet.

Some might be bored about all this for a doe, but on the last day, with that stalk, with one of my hadguns I thought it was way cool.

For those that like to know...24grains H110/296 behind a 240 XTP in my Freedom Arms M83 44Magnum, 2x Leupold, 7.5" barrel.  5 shots in under 3" at 100 yards with my wrists braced.  Nice gun.

Thanks for reading this far.  Hope your season went well.

Oh, and If I didn't say before...WooHoo!

I enjoy reading stories like this. In my book, buck or doe doesn't matter much, it's all about being out there hunting  ;D

rimfire - from a fellow new yorker, or actually, a fellow upstater, congratulations.  That kind of success is just one of the great things about handgun hunting.

Oh Yeah - and WooHoo.  Mikey.

Thanks for the great story & Congratulations!

My .44mag load this year was pretty much identical 23.6gr 296 with the 240xtp  out of a 7.5" SBH  with the shot placement being pretty much like you described.
Was great performance and this was the sbh's first blood. My shot was right around 53yds and the Deer ran for about 29yds.

Thanks for your replies guys.  It would seem that all of the Trophy bucks avoid me like the plague so I have to get my enjoyment from trying different hunting methods and enjoying the experience.  I really got a kick out of this...felt like a commando crawling with my face in the snow.  I was really pleased with my shot under those circumstances and overall it was just satisfying.

The other nice thing I forgot to mention is that a very good friend of ours asked for a deer and offered to pay the processing fee, and this doe is going to them with my compliments...so that was great too.

Oh...as for the snow I suggest watching the weather channel on a regular basis until this confusion is abated, or sticking your head in the freezer for a few hours and this will give you some insight!

Have a great Holidays and...hopefully...enjoy some venison.

Barry

Nothing wrong with a doe, you ought to see some of the poor little spike bucks my fellow okies shoot just to shoot a buck.......I'd be ashamed to check them in. If it's someone on their first deer  hunt or a youngster I see no problem though..........

Great story.  You were there, we weren't, but reading it gave me a good feeling, 'cause I've been there-done that.

Great story. Nothing wrong with a doe or small buck. I am not a trophy hunter. I believe the journey to the outcome is the real trophy.
Congrats.....! To a fellow New Yorker.

Rimfire...Congradulations!  Now that is hunting at its finest.  Spot a deer  before it is alarmed...stalking and a well placed shot.  Doesn't get any better than that.  You can be proud of your accomplishments.  Plus full use of the meat.

Maybe you could get the hide tanned for your memories and some decorations around the house....(unless of course you tie your own fly's...then I would see some small caddis fly's and heading for the trout streams).

Congrats from another  fellow NY'er

We don't all need to shoot deer for their headgear.  Any deer, doe included are a great trophy with a handgun.  I am proud of the doe I got with a handgun this year.  Just as proud of the 6 point basket buck I got with my bow.  Makes for great memories of being in the field :D
A bad day of hunting is better than a good day at the golf course.

Great Story and good shot.  Every deer is a different experience, buck or doe.  I'm not a trophy hunter.  I hunt for a deer.  We are only allowed one here in NH, and it goes in the freezer!  Funny thing, they taste just as good without horns as they do with horns.  Sometimes even better.  Any deer taken with a handgun is a challenge.

My last was a doe at 65 yds, on the last day of the season last year.  All I could see was her head and neck over the top of a little ridge in front of me.  I did have a 2X scope, but didn't have any way to get a rest.  I was standing, thought I had heard something, and then caught sight of the deer shaped object through the brush.  The scope confirmed it was a good sized doe, and that I had a clear lane of fire to her through the brush.  All I could do was go for as steady a two hand hold as I could, concentrate on my squeeze, and hope the gun did the rest.  At the shot, the deer disappeared, and three more deer broke out of the brush to my left.  They all crashed down by in front of me, perhaps 15-25 yds away, in between me and the ridge.  Since we are only allowed one deer, and I didn't know if I had hit the doe, all I could do was watch them go.  After things quieted down, i went over across and over the ridge to find the doe had taken the shot dead center in the neck and had dropped on the spot.  That was a very exciting and rewarding day.

Again, congrats on your successful hunt.  You have another hunting experience that will give you memories forever and give you another story to tell your kids or grandkids someday when you prepare them for their first hunts.
Success is a journey, not a destination...  Might as well enjoy the ride!!

Just remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.  You can rely on 911 or on 1911. The choice is yours.
