Travel gun?
« on: December 10, 2007, 03:30:07 PM »
I'm fixing to go on a trip what gun(s) do you guy take on the road I'm thinking of cutting down this extra 3006 barrel down to 18" i can break it down and transport it. Plus this will be a great woods gun i figure with the short barrel i would have between a 30 30 and a 308 in this 06. Plus it would make pretty bright lights out of the muzzle.

I have done the same thing, but with a 30-30.I cut the barrel to 17inches, cut one inch off the buttstock. With the 30-30 you do not loose as much in 5 inches of barrel.   I think the 30-06 should be a flame thrower and loud as all get out.If you do not hit the animal the noise should daze it and you can provide the coup de gras with a pocket knife LOL   Doug

This is mine, 30 carbine:

Fits in this:

The longest part will be the stock and action, so cut the barrel to match what the stock and action length is, it will be more than 18 inches.  Larry

Canon6 - I like your cut down .30-30.  That big toe in the bottom right looks deadly too.

BTW what kind of stocks are those?  I've never seen that color before.

I am not sure why us "gunnuts" have to show our toes,I am sure some physc type will find"something troubling" about this behavior.
That rifle is 33 inches long, and points like an extension of your arm.
I have designed a fixed V rear sight into the scope base.Using JB weld I built up the rear most slot, I will file it down to for poa/poi for the usual load.173 gr fngc @ 1900 fps. I have a fairly bad picture of the sight.   Doug

I'm sure it was to get the entire rifle in the picture.  I was just having a little fun.  After season, when I get my .30-30 barrel, I will need to be picking your brain for some loads and tips.

I missed the question about the color of the stock.I bought the rifle from Longcruise and in a email he recalled that it was Krylon  ,IIRC it was sand, textured, he sent me the info, but as usual I cannot find my file.   Doug

It is a Simmons 2 1/2x 20 shotgun scope. At the ranges I envision using the 30-30 at, it is perfect.  Doug

Actually Remington used to sell their Model 742 Autoloader in 30-06 with an 18 1/2 inch barrel.  Couldn't have been too much of a flamethrower if they sold it that way.

I went out today to adjust the front sight on my 30-30.Target at 25yds(more on this later) cardboard box with my favorite target,3 inch square sticky notes.
Ist shot low and left. adjust front sight , trim  for shot two and three, group size of the last two is .307x.470  I will take it.
With the sight setting at @ 25yds it  on at 150 yds, and never rises or falls more than 2.4 inches. This is with a 173 grain fngc at 1950fps.Doug

What is the 173 gr fngc exactly?  I assume the fn is flat nose but am not familier with the gc term.  I'm assuming it's a cast since its 173 gr.

173gr(.309) FNGC from Oregon Trail Bullets, a healthy charge of  RL15, Winchester brass and CCI large rifle primers.I tend not posting charge weight, as each rifle is a animal unto its self.I got the load from Paco Kelly's site, and after two different weights I arrived at this one.hth  Doug

I was interested in that bullet also.  Trust me, I will start small and work up, probably with 748 and if I can't find accuracy there I will use the 3031 but I will definitly get the Oregan Trail Bullets.  I always like my cast on the heavy side.  Thanks Doug.
