RL 22 or RL 25 for the 300MAG...?
« on: June 23, 2003, 08:24:23 PM »
I have be using IMR4350 with 180gr Speer SPBT's for my 16.5" 300MAG pistol velocity with 71grs of 4350 is 2687fps.Would RL22 or RL25 be better? Would I see added velocity using one of these? Factory Remington 180gr ammo has a velocity of 2720fps.Would like to see if I can reach 2800fps with a 180.

Have you seen any pressure signs on the primers. I'm not sure you can reach that vel with out excededing the pressure? Most testing is done with 24 or 26 inch barrels. They burn all the powder.. <:) Keep us posted??

I have not seen any pressure signs at all.I know I'm burning ALL the powder how...you ask ? .....Well I took a 4x8 sheet of ply-wood painted it white and shot over it.There was NO powder in the barrel left over and the ply-wood was clean.I also shot the same reload in my 26" Mod.-70 300mag rifle and the velocity was only  2890fps.The 16.5 pistol pushed the same load 2687fps...Hmmmm thats only 203fps slower than the rifle.I would say YA I'm burning all the powder.

RL-22 & RL-25

My Sendero in 300 WM gets a tweak more out of RL-22 and RL-25 over IMR 4350 or 4831. Both RL's were more accurate. RL-25 gave about 35 fps more velocity over RL-22. Shooting new Nosler 200 gr. Accubond at 3,000 fps with no pressure indicators. In fact still below max loads where the 300 WM generally shines best. Just shot at 200 and both loads were well within 2" off cross sticks (elk hunt this fall so I am practicing as I expect to shoot). Historically, I have always done better with RL-22 and RL-25 in belted mags. Meters great and settles in cases nicely. I would definitely try them and go with RL-22 first since you will be most likely using lighter weight bullets in that hand cannon. Gotta believe the muzzle blast is a bit snorky though.
