Improvised Steady Sling
« on: December 11, 2007, 05:37:23 AM »
I was looking for a way to have my hands free to use binos while carrying my scoped model 83.  Made a loop of parachute cord and put it around my neck.  Slipped a loop around the pistol butt and under/around the trigger guard and let it dangle for glassing.  Worked great...and no way was the loop prone to come off of the pistol.

Well...I got a bonus in that I grabbed the gun and pushed it out in front of me.  The loop tightened around my neck and added some very useful dynamic tension to my hold.  It helped my steadiness significantly and was so simple.  I wish I had done this before and I really am looking forward to playing with it and shooting.

Another string on here I started yesterday discusses my last day deer.  Shot was taken with the loop engaged as it were.  Shot was from 80+ yards and it almost felt easy...not really...but definitely EASIER.

Whether you use the loop for the gun to hang or not, which I have not decided if I love yet......you might want to try is as a shooting aid.

Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

Sounds like you need a lanyard loop? Get in touch with Bowens custom guns.

I hAVE been thinking of the same thing for a while, can you please post a pic of the way you tied it.. I am concerned that having a lanyard attachment will somehow throw off the tension thing or not serve for that as well if it is on the bottom of the grip instead of more in line with the hands when pushing out... I was posting about that on the contender encore thread recently and did not get the responses I hoped for.. still have not gotten it figured out.. but think it would be great, especially hung over one shoulder and under the other...
I think it is a great idea, and would like to see what you are doing with it..
thanks in advance..

Guys 20 some years ago i made a single six hunter, started with ss single six add leopould 2 power in lepould mounts, trigger job and springs.I drilled the grip frame and installed a sling swivel, and found a swivel for a marlin gun the kind that clamps on the barrel.I added a  very lite weight nylon strap. Also put packmayer grips on the gun this combo could shoot five eights inch groups at 25 yards. The gun was a joy to shoot and  carry this way.I would loop the sling or strap as it were and it gave very good positive pressure for off hand shooting like in the above post.Good luck tinkering and be safe Mtn Jack

I wanted to scope my S&W 657 & 617 last year but could not figure out how to carry it easily with a scope.  Luckily I had access to a CNC machine.  I made some stainless sling swivels that take the place of the screw in the bottom of the grip (they are just like an Uncle Mikes but with a different thread.  Used some nylon webbing and a sling swivel to finish the job.  Makes the gun easy to carry and does help steady the gun as stated when shooting.  I went this route because the only lanyard ring I could find was at Bowens custom guns at it was way overpriced.  Bet I could sell a bunch of them, someone needs to market them.

On my Contender pistol, I removed one of the screws holding the cap on the bottom of the handle and replaced it with a larger wood screw to secure a sling loop with. For the sling, I use a belt that can be adjusted. I can carry my scoped pistol on a shoulder or around the neck. When waiting for game and shooting, I have it around my neck and use the tension as the OP described. Been working well for several years now. Collected a nice buck last year using this setup.
