Which one?
« on: December 11, 2007, 11:19:41 PM »
I have a Handi 45/70 that I bought in the spring.I have since seen the need to add other barrels. My wife has given the sign of approval for 2 more when hunting season is over.My question is,which calibers should I get and why?I hunt deer in SW Miss primarily. The area I hunt in consists of hardwood, pine and some cutover/open fields.I own a few deer rifles already(300 WSM,270,7mm-08,50 cal ML,and 45/70).Its hard to decide what I want and input would be appreciated.Dont "need" anything but I just feel the urge.Im sure lots of you know the feeling.

Looks like you got everything covered except coyotes. so Id go with a 223 ,or 243 or 204. The 223 is dirt cheap to shoot & fun. You started out right with the 45/70
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

Well you have the "must have" flagship of the fleet with the 45/70. I agree on a .223 or perhaps even the .243. My second place rifle barrel choice for your next barrel would be another "oldie-but-goodie", the 30-30, loaded with spitzer bullets, in the Handi it's a great caliber, and no slouch and a great deer, bear, and hog gun in it's own right with either 150 or 170 grain RN or FP bullets. Have you considered a shotgun barrel (or 2 shotgun barrels), they are cheaper than riffle barrels so a 2 or 1 swap seems fair to ME at least). How about a nice 24" Turkey barrel with screw in choke tubes, or either a TDC vent rib barrel in 12 or 20, also with screw in choke tubes. A Tracker I (or Tracker II if you cannot locate a Tracker I) in 12 or 20 would be a great addition also, great for slugs and the smoothbore model and barrels are nice for buckshot..Good luck to you buddy, so many choices. Welcome aboard buddy and have a very Merry Christmas....<><....:)

Hadn't really thought about the shotgun barrel.I turkey hunt maybe once or twice a year at most. Will definitely look into the 30/30 and the 243 for my little boy who will be hunting in another 2 or 3 yrs.I don't need anymore guns but for the price of the extra barrels I can't afford to pass it up.Anybody have any experience with the 25/06 in the Handi ?Thanks for the input and ya'll have a very Merry Christmas as well. Thanks for the warm welcome.

I've owned quite a few 25-06 Handi's...It is an excellent caliber...usually berry berry accurate...easy on the shoulder...balances exceptionally well (for me ;) )...and is deadly on deer & varmints...not to mention...if you ever get a wild hair ( something many of us do on a regular basis..) it is an excellent barrel to have rebored for any of the larger 06' based wildcats..

My last one...which is this one..

Just got sold to D_hiker...it was pretty darn accurate at 300 yards with my work up loads...about 3160fps with the 115 grain Combined Technology Silver Ballistic tip.....

Yup...I really like them... :D :D :D

You have a gap between 45 and 30 cal.
A 357 should fill it nicely.
Also I agree that a lighter varmint cal is in order.

I would have to agree with the 25/06. I hunt in the same general area, South Miss and I think that the 25 cal is about perfect for our deer. I don't have one in a handi but a 25 of some sort is usually what I reach for when hunting S. Mississippi. When I Move north, my caliber choice goes up slightly. I also have a 45-70 and she has been great, she has 2 kills this week, one for me and one for a buddy. Good luck.

I hunt Lincoln and Copiah counties in MS myself. If you don't have a 30/06 around here your deer arsenal is not quite complete. As for what you really need that is offered in a Handi I think a 30/30 is a must have and a .243 is a nice compromise between the .223 and the 25/06.

If you read a while here, you'll see my standard answer is usually both, all you have to do is just decide which to get first!!  ;D ;)
