What Conical for 50 cal Encore
« on: December 12, 2007, 04:54:57 AM »
I have a 50 caliber Encore barrel on it's way. What conical mold is everyone doing well with for deer hunting?

I really want to cast my own for this barrel.

Not sure what you are interested in shooting. Paper, other targets , gongs or game. Rate of twist will dictate some conicals not good or good. I reckon yours is a 1:28? How fast of vel. do you want to push them? Heavy powder loads tend to have sealing trouble as hot powder gas cuts the lead. I'd say the longer conicals will produce better than short ones.  Half a dz. good mold making companies out there. You may need to get a sizer to get them to fit bore snug but not hammer pounding tight! I think 300 grs. & up maxi-balls REAL's. Bunch more i just haven't went and opened up a book. Should be someone on here will add more and maybe better info.

In general T/c barrels with QLA do not shoot conicals very well. Maybe you got lucky and got a barrel that will shoot them. I have heard more that will not than those that will. If you are set on keeping the T/C and it does not shoot the conicals have a gunsmith cut the QLA off and recrown the barrel (others have had good luck with that approach). Personally I leave my T/C Omega for sabots and shoot conicals out of the Whites or the new Knight KRB7.

I have an Encore 50 cal. It shot my REAL with a Lee mould (365 gr.)  good for a few shots and the accuracy went bad until I cleaned it. I made the mistake so putting Lee alox on the bullets. I was told this was a mistake. I have not tried them yet without alox yet. Should I keep the alox off?

Agree with what Keith Lewis said.  My .50 Encore won't shoot conicals with any accuracy.  However it does shoot 300 gr. XTP's in a Harvestor "crushrib" sabot very accurately.  I hope to have some deer volunteers to try them out on in our late season. ;)

Which 300 gr. XTP bullet are you using? The .430 diameter 44 cal or the .452 diameter 45cal bullet?
My brother has been shooting the 240 gr. .430 44cal. XTP and been having great results on paper and deer. I'm a tinkerer and like to develop a load with the heavier bullet.

Thanks

Been using the 240 grain .44 caliber XTP in the short black sabots for years.  Killed lots of deer and dozens of hogs with it.  For a heavier bullet try the 300 grain .44 caliber XTP.  My CVA Magnum Hunter makes 3 shot cloverleafs at 50 yards with it and 110 grains of 777:   It makes 1.5 " groups at 100 yards.

I like the older Hornaday sabots. They were all Hollow Points. I think they quit making them but if you can find them get them.
