Ruger Single Six followed me home today
« on: December 12, 2007, 08:32:19 AM »
Went to the gun shop this morning and picked up the gun that I was thinking about purchasing for a couple days now...It is a used Ruger Single Six in 22lr/22wmr with a 6 1/2" barrel.  It came with both cylinders.  Here are some pics...The only real noticeable wear to the gun is on the bottom of the grip.  There are a few scratches.  I brought it home and gave it a good scrubbing and it looks pretty darn good...Especially for $289...I can't wait to shoot this little 22...I can already see upgrades in my near future...New grips, springs, polishing and smoothing things out internally...It's a sickness.  But, I believe that I am in good company...

and here's the pic that shows some of the marks on the bottom of the grip panels...

Looks like a great find and a great buy, congrats on a great deal.  Remember, shoot it often!!

Very nice!  Congrats on a great buy.  You're right on both counts:  it is a sickness and you are in good company.   :D

I had no plans to purchase this gun when I was looking around the gun store...It just jumped out at me from the used revolver display...Well, the Single Six and a Freedom Arms 454 Casull with a 7 1/2" barrel.  They were asking $1190 for a mint used FA Field Grade Model 83.  I bought the Ruger...

Could it be you were at the Buffalo Gun Center? They had a couple used FA 454s. Wanted a 44 Mag so I got one of them.

I actually ordered in a Mod 83 Premier in 44 mag. But either one of those guns would be cool especially the 4 5/8 inch gun. They always have something I "need"

Yup...They're funny like that...I didn't plan on purchasing that Single Six...It just happened.  I feel that every used gun deserves a home...Too bad for my wallet that it is my home... ::)

Id take in any decent used , neglected ,homeless  gun for free & feed them the best ammo i could afford.

Just think of all those poor chopped up, melted down  guns out there - that didnt make it- in those various disarm the public programs :(

Well...I removed the unsightly grip and refinished it.  Here is the finished product...I learned a few things along the way.

#1. Always use a lint free cloth to apply the finish. (I thought I was using one  )
#2. Do not apply the finish too thick or it will run. (Yup, know about that one)
#3. The 13th coat looks a ton better than the 2nd coat.
#4. There's no rush.

These pics do not do the grip justice...The finish is so much deeper than the pics will show.  So far, I have left the high gloss finish in tact...I like it that way...At least for now.

I applied 13 coats of Tru-Oil along the way and then applied two coats of carnauba wax.

Excellent job on the grips.  I have two of the super single sixes, one blue and one stainless, both 5.5 inch barrels.  The blued one, I have had for over 25 years the stainless I bought a couple of years ago, much like you walked into my local gun shop and saw it laying there, the owner made me a real deal and it to followed me home.  It has largely taken the place of the blued one in my holster.  They are probably my favorite 22 handgun.  At least they get carried and shot more than any of the others.  I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have enjoyed mine.
