Found 3/8" round file for barrel lug!!!!!
« on: December 12, 2007, 09:22:06 AM »
Hey guys,  I don't know who else has been looking, but I've finally found a good looking round file for the barrel lug.  My problem is I can only order from a local distributor, and the files come in a box of five for 22.78 each=113.90

If I can find 3 more interested in this file, I will buy and we could split + shipping to you.  Either PM me or post here.  If I get more than three I will see if they will find a local distributor and they can work that out themselves.

The rep I spoke with ( Sue) said the file only tapers at the end giving a large 3/8" filing area.  Tim suggested going with the "second" cut, so I will go with that.  Here is a link to the site.  They do not sell online, must go thru a local distributor.

The box a five comes with one handle, which we can do a straw pull or something for, unless nobody wants it.

Help me out guys,...

Thanks,

JerryKo

Not sure, but when I first spoke with a rep, he asked for my zip code I gave him Uniontown PA which is a bigger city close to me 15401 and he located Valley National Gas in Uniontown.  I spoke with John, and he is who I must order through.  He is also who quoted me the price.  His tele# is 724-438-1161.  He doesn't stock that file and it is why I must buy the box.

If someone else wants em, I can probably get em to order more, but let me check the size first to see how close they are to .375". ;)

Reading the description on their website I got the impression they come with a handle on each but might have read that wrong.

The ones they have in stock are the 11071 wiithout the handle, the 11071H comes with the handle. If you're like me, I have less handles than files, just swap em when I need to use one that doesn't have a handle on it, guess I'm kind of a cheapskate in that respect!! :D

Depends on where you measure the file, because of the taper, it's not easy to get the pivot cut so it's perfect, I swap the file back and forth in the jig to keep the cut square to the barrel so it's not too tight or loose on one side or the other. I prefer the cut to be slightly smaller rather than slightly too big in diameter, that way there's two bearing points instead of just one as there would be if the cut it slightly too big. ;)

Well heck, that was a waste of time, the Pherd files are .390" to .394", way too big, sorry fellas, they aren't gonna work. :'( Next time I'm at the local tool shop, I'll see what they have in stock. ;)

Not your fault, I just wish the industry standard for a 3/8" file was close to .375", but it isn't, some of those I checked at the tool shop were well over .400"!! ::)

Aren't they hand fit at the factory.  Surely they buy their files somewhere.

The factory cut looks like it's done by a rotating tool, seems to me you can see the fitting machine in the Factory Tour video in the FAQs. ;)

Ya, Pferd has cutting tools listed for 3/8" also.  Don't know the cost.  It might be in my reqest info bucket at the pferd link.  Not sure how good it would work in a rotozip or dremel with some kind of framing to hold you square and control to .001.  Probably not at my ability level. :D

i couldn't see it in the tour video at least not real good.

I have a .375" carbide cutting tool that I spend $25 on to try to use in my drill press, but it  doesn't work, the bearings in the drill press aren't tight enough and it just chattered in the pivot. It may work in the mini-mill tho, I just haven't decided if I want to spend $450 for it tho!! ???

If MCK has some good files, I'll get em for you fellas, but the last time I checked they didn't have much in stock, but who knows, maybe we'll get lucky. :D

v8r, see the barrel fitting info, then you'll see what the files are for, I don't use a handle on the barrel fitting jig, it has a handle built in. I've done exhaustive internet and local searches for a straight 3/8" round file, but they're all tapered and none so far are .375" in diameter, they're close, but not close enough. :-\

Tim did you run your drill press at the slowest speed? It might still do what you need if you can get the speed down as in WAY down.
200 RPM might be good
as slow as 50 to 75 RPM might be a lot better.

There are also 3/8" India stones that are much more suited for this work than a file. A coarse India stone used with oil will cut fast enough and is much more precise in material removal.

If Gesswein does not have it they should give you a good idea of what is available. Look under mold finishing. Gesswein is used for finishing plastic injection molds in industry.

Ireload2, I didn't see anything there that would work, but thanks.

Went to MCK, haven't been there for months, just my luck they're closed for inventory today, so will have to wait until Monday. ::)

MCK didn't really have anything different than I've used before, but today I went to Vancouver Bolt to see what they had in stock, found out that Simonds Intl makes a chain saw file that is 3/8"!! Bad news is they can only be ordered by the dozen :o, good news is they're less than $3 each :D, so I ordered a box. Hopefully they'll be  .375" or just slightly smaller.  ;D It's on page 5 of their catalog.

Simonds also makes a file called a Gullet Special (page 6) that's a straight 3/8", those they had in stock are .360"-.365", so with a little touch up with a wrap of wet/dry sandpaper, as near as perfect cut could be made.

If these work out good, I'll be glad to share them for cost plus shipping just as I did on the stock bolts. You can also find a local Simonds dealer, they have a contact page if you want to try and order one locally.

There's also one online source, the chainsaw file is $390 a dozen though, real proud of them, aren't they!! ::) http://www.utsupply.com/viewprodtable.asp?CategoryIDSS=1595
