Finished my Siamese--Range pix--

Here is my long awaited project at its completion..If you remember, I started off with a Siamese Mauser Purchased on GunBroker last April...I sent the action to ER Shaw for a 25" Stainless barrel,lugs lapped,bolt bent ,and, drilled and tapped...That came back to me in July..I had ordered a Stock from Richards Microfit, a modern classic style in Claro Walnut and 1" pad...It finally came last week.
  It is now free floated and glass bedded and topped off with a 3-12x50mm A-1 Optic range compensator scope...Ready for the range to be sighted in...

That is one pretty rifle.  You have to - that is 'must' - let us know how it shoots.  Richards makes some nice stocks.  Mikey.

Going to the range with it tomorrow(Sat.) is on my agenda..I will shoot it at 100,200,&300 yds.
I will get back here with range pix/results.

Well some problems developed on the feedramp and in the trigger so my shooting was limited at best to three shots spread across a 3 inch group.
I know it sounds bad but the trigger was hanging up causing my third shot to stray and the feed ramp needs some tweaking.
Also the wind was howling at 27mph.

Aardvark,

I had a Siamese reworked to 45-70 sometime in the late 70's.  It was a good rifle and brought home it's share of game.

Mine was 26 inches of blued steel and walnut.

I got recipes for loads from the Handloaders Digest.  Ken Waters did an exhaustive study og 45-70 guns and loads.  I believe he was the first to include loads for the super strong actions, SIamese and Ruger single shots.  He really had some hot ones.

For anyone else who might be interested the article I mentioned is in Handloader's Digest #7.

I believe it is a reprint of the articles written by Ken Waters and published in Handloader and Rifle magazines.  Or the other way around.

Anyway, quite a bit of info in the 20+ pages of writing.

If demand is sufficient, I am sure someone could figure out how to post the article on some site somewhere for all to read.

In the meantime, if anyone has the 7th edition, it is a good read.

My father was a reloader, and was very good and knowledgeable.  He was a gunwriter, and had 1 or 2 articles printed in Rifle, a long time ago. 
One of his favorite rifles was a Siamese mauser 45-70.  He worked up a number of loads, and wrote an article about these.  I think he might have tried to publish them, but I don't know. 
Dad passed away 3 years ago.  I've got the rifle, I believe my brother might still have the article.  I'll see if I can track it down, if anyone might be interested.

I would love to see that article.  Some of the stuff written today is just full of so much hype the entire read is a bore. 

The articles of yesterday were written by the men and women who often did the work or who were in direct collaboration with those who did, and it was a much better read than todays stuff.  That's jmtcw.  Mikey.

The Saimese (Thailand) mauser action was used in their army service rifle, an 8mm rimmed bottle necked cartridge.  They are as strong and as well designed as contemporary M1898 military rifles.  The rifles were built at Japanese national arsenals.  Being designed for a large rimmed cartrige, they are ideal for large rimmed calibers (.444 Marlin, .45-70, etc).  When imported by the tens of thousands in the 1960's and 1970's, they quickly became the sought-after favourites for building bolt action .45-70 sporter rifles.

John,   Can you use drop-in triggers on these actions as you can the 98 actions?   Are these similar to the actions that Navy arms are using?   Thanks,   Bill

The Siamese mauser action uses a bolt and trigger mechanism that is a copy of the Mauser 1898.  The trigger itself is a little longer and sweeps back more.  I would think that little or no fitting is needed to make a commercial trigger work.

I don't know if Navy Arms is using Siamese mauser actions for sporter rifles.  I've heard of and seen ads for bolt action SMLE rifles chambered for .45-70.  Is that what you are thinking of?

Navy Arms used the Siamese Mauser for their 45-70 that was marketed +/- 30 years ago. 

Since that time NA and Gibbs have promoted the SMLE in 45-70.

Not sure if the SMLE is still available as Gibbs is defunct, at least the last time I checked.
