".44 Mag Scope"
« on: December 13, 2007, 08:57:17 AM »
I got an H&R .44 mag rifle last month and decided to mount a scope on it, to hunt with next deer season. I really like the Bushnell Trophy 1.75 x 4. This is only going to be a 100 yard gun. Do you all think this would be an ok setup? I'm sure the scope would hold up to the recoil since it is said to go on slug guns and muzzleloaders. Has anybody had one of these scopes and did you like it?  Thanks, ELMO

I have a Smith 629 44 mag and 3 years ago I put on the Simmons pro-hunter 2-6X scope. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=113584&t=11082005 I mounted it with the Burris rings with the plastic inserts and I shoot nothing but full boat loads of 44 mag with this gun. This Simmons scope has held up to everything. I hunt with this gun and it just has not moved from center. For a $100 scope, it's just a quality piece of glass.

Dave.

PS, I did take a doe with it last week at 40 yards. The bullet went right where the crosshairs were aimed!

I dunno what the heck Dave's pistol scope with 11"-20" of eye relief is gonna do for ya on a Handi, I think he forgot what forum he's in here!! :D But the Bushnell Trophy is a great scope, but the huge power ring will require high or extra high rings without hammer modifications, see the Rings link in the FAQs for more info. The scope will hold up fine, I have a Trophy on my .405 Winchester Target, works great, but I've also modified the hammer to mount it in low rings, see the current Low Profile Hammer mod thread.

Elmo, I tried one (the trophy) on my muzzleloader at the range this year, and it was alright.  A decent scope for the price.  I have since switched to a Nikon Buckmaster 4x40 scope.  It is in the same price range and to my eyes, it transmits much more light at dusk and dawn conditions.

Like quickdtoo said, the Trophy needs high rings, so you might as well use a 40mm scope if you are mounting it up that high.

Since you are using it for deer hunting, you may know how important the scope is at the first or last shooting minutes of the day.
Go to a gun shop around sunset and see if they will let you look around outside.  Shopping for a scope under fluorescent lights in a big store won't tell you much about light transmitting quality.

Tim, I dunno what good it's gonna do him either. ???  Actually, I was lookin at the current post at the very bottom of the forum....you know, where it just shows about the most current 10 post? Well, I clicked it and paid no attention to what forum I was in.

But hey.....he could buy it and then he would be all set for a future 44 mag handgun!

See.....sliver linings in every cloud!!!

Elmo ,

I have a Bushnell Banner Scope 1.5-4.5x 32mm (shotgun scope) on my black powder smoke pole (CVA Magbolt 150)
love that the center ring around the fine center cross hairs is the same size as the bullseye at 100 yrds  heh
Has done good as for sighting in and remaining on point even after i had the four wheeler roll over on top of the rifle while traversing a fallen tree this ML season , Yeah Yeah i know guys hehhehe ... thats not the point you need to focus on lol  :P  the point being that even after taking a tumble and having the wieght of the 4 trax on it 2 times before coming to rest on a tree.... Was that it still shot true .. A testiment to CVA and Bushnell !
Also picked up a Dusk to Dawn 3-9x40 ,It tops my 223 handi bull barrel .. So far it has done good, But i think i wont be tryin the Four wheeler roll over test on it ;)
On the other side I too have had one of the Nikons' in 4x32 ... It topped my old Mini thirty and did great ,good clarity and light gathering...Price wasnt bad for the quality of glass that nikon makes, and sold me on nikon as a very good optic choice versus Legpole and some of the other high end scopes out there..

Hope that helped ya out ..

I also have had good results with the bushnell 1.5 to 4.5 mounted on a 45 carbine; however, have not tried laying my quad on top of it ;D :o ;D

The Banner 1½-4½x32 is a great scope, but again, high rings will be necessary due to the large power ring if the hammer isn't modified.

I have a Simmons 2.5X20 on my Marlin 336...30/30. It works very well..but it is an older model

That one that CDNN has looks much like the Tasco Bantam 2.5X20..I bought one of those recently and put it on a little Anschutz "woodchucker" that I have.
It worked well through the summer as my "truck gun"..

NCsurveyor sent me a second, identical Tasco Bantam that I will mount on a coon hunting .22 auto. Since I am a hunter, rather than a target shooter, I don't need super magnification other than for distance/varmints .
While the older Simmons has a dual-X reticle, the Tasco has a slightly coarser shotgun/blackpowder dual-X with circle.
These scopes work well with the H&R rifles..since they have 5-6" eye relief..which greatly (IMO) helps quicker reloading..

Elmo...it will work ok...If you get a chance to...take a look at a Weaver K4...I think you might be impressed with it if you do..

Good Luck
