Model 83 price check

I have an opportunity to buy a premier 83 in 454 with a 45LC extra cylinder.  No box but all paperwork.  It is like new with 30 rounds through it 7 1/2 inch barrel. 
$1200 shipped.  good deal?  Great deal?  crazy if I don't do it?  money wise tight time of year but if this a once in a lifetime deal I could swing it.

That's a pretty good deal with the extra cylinder.  I paid 1100 OTD for an M83 field grade.

At today's prices that's a very good IF that's what you want. It's only a good deal if you want it that way. An extra cylinder adds over $400 to the new cost of an M83 but if you have zero interest in the extra cylinder then to you it has no real value. If you do want that extra cylinder so you can use .45 Colt rounds as well then it makes this an excellent deal.

You'd pay over $2000 for sure if you were buying new, how much over would depend on the seller's profit margin. With current pricing I'd say it's an excellent deal. I used to not think so until I checked the current pricing of them recently when I picked up my FA97. Prices have really gone up a BUNCH since the last one I had gotten.

Right you are GB, I paid $2300 for a FIXED SIGHT 454 Casull FA'83 with a second cylinder (45 LC) here  in the PRC.  I've found that about 99% of my use is with the LC cylinder.  I'd buy that gun in a heartbeat!! ;)

After months of trying I finally got $900.00 out of my unfired 83.  They are often pretty cheap in used condition.

It was a field grade.  I paid around $1600.00 for it new.

Swampman, I'm not sure why but the Field grades will not usually bring over $1000.00 in used condition. For that reason I will not buy a Field grade gun. There is a very good buy on a Premier grade on Auction Arms $899.99 is the opening bid, and the potential buying price as it had no bids the last time it was listed.

With the Premier grade you get some pretty crummy looking wood grips for a whole lot more money.  They also give you a warranty.  I'm still trying to figure out why you have to buy the warranty.

Something to keep in mind...In FA's eyes, a second owner Field Grade is the same as a Premier Grade.  The life time warranty goes out the door when the Premier is sold.  So the only difference there 'SHOULD' be for the price (Field vs Premier) is the brushed finish vs the matte finish and the grips.  I wouldn't pay more than the cost of the grips, maybe $200 if micarta, $100 for the wood.  The finish isn't worth any difference to me.

I was disappointed in my FA83.  I guess after dreaming of having one for 25 years, it just wasn't as magic as I had expected.  I'm a huge Ruger single action fan.

A huge Ruger fan you say.  What exactly do you find so great about the Rugers compared to the disappointing Freedom Arms?  Is it their wobbly cylinders that you like?  Lockup is more like a gym locker than a bank vault in my experience.  Maybe the over sized chambers and undersized throats appeal to you more than the perfect dimensions in a Freedom Arms.  That nice tight spot in the barrel under the threads is always nice for accuracy, along with the creepy triggers that break like uncooked spaghetti, instead of glass.  The only thing Ruger has going for it compared to a Freedom Arms is the price, and I believe you get what you pay for.  I am sorry you had to lose $700 on your deal.

Good point Daug, kinda hard to judge some thing you have not even had the opportunity to shoot.

Swampman yes you can buy at least four Rugers for the price of one Freedom Arms revolver, but what to get ya you guessed it four Rugers big deal. I would much rather have one Freedom Arms revolver.

Whats so different w/the 83 that one needs a separate cylinder for the 45LC? What not just shoot the 45LC in the 454 cylinder? The cylinder on the 454 SRH comes marked for both calibers ~

That was one of my issues.  I didn't want to pay $200.00 to fire .45 Colt.  I like the Rugers way better.  All of mine are very accurate, and they are attractive guns.

Its all about chamber tolerance.  The Ruger SRH chambers are looser than the FAs.  When you shoot 45 colts in a 454 chamber it will leave a ring in front of of the case.  If the chamber isn't thoroughly cleaned and a 454 cartridge is shot the ring will act as a restriction holding the bullet tighter and causing the pressure to rise.  Being the Ruger chambers are looser than FAs   Its not AS big of a deal.  With FA tight chambers the pressure spike can be extreme if the ring is well built up.  If you were to only shoot 45colts in the M83 454 cylinder there will never be an issue.  Or just make sure you completely remove the ring after shooting 45s before your shoot 454s.  After cleaning some 357s I picked up used that has 38s shot primarily through them, I can say that the ring can be VERY hard to completely remove.

FA recommends the use of a 45colt only cylinder because allot of people won't properly clean the chambers before switching ammo.
