.25-06 to .257 weatherby
« on: December 13, 2007, 08:38:56 PM »
Has anyone reamed their  .25-06 barrel out to .257 weatherby magnum. I have been reading up on this cartridge and shot one and it is something I would like to do. I already know what alot will say "why do you need that it will just burn more barrels and won't kill the animals anymore than the .25-06 will".  I want something different. I don't like weatherby guns from a looks standpoint but I love my handi rifle. Also it could be done for pretty cheap I think. I know brass is on the spendy side but who cares it would be unique I think. Well what do you guys think thanks.

There is a feller on here that has done it before, his name is Fred M. A mighty handy guy, does a lot of good work on these little guns, he has done it before. And to my best knowledge he is the only one that has done his to a .257. A fine caliber and cartridge IMO. Anyways, you wait a lil while and the guys will tell you a little more than i can, and I'm sure Fred would be more than happy to help ya!. Take care and keep your nose to the wind, watch your topknot.

Henry1 -- I do believe Fred M's re-barrel job was to .257 Roberts, not Weatherby Magnum. We should let Quick weigh in on this topic -- he knows the pressure and bolt-thrust maximums for a standard Handi frame. However -- the new Magnum Handi should be a perfect candidate for a re-chamber to .257 Weatherby. You'd have to buy a .300 Win or 7mm Rem Mag Handi, and have it re-barreled to .25-'06, then send it to someone who can re-chamber the .25-'06 barrel for you.

The new Magnum frame ought to be able to withstand the pressure of .257 Weatherby, but let's let Quick have the final word.

Ya Fred's is a 257Roberts. I think 257 Weatherby is too much for an SB-2 frame
