Grips For Heavy Recoil?
« on: December 14, 2007, 02:12:07 AM »
What grips are you using on your higher recoil Contenders?  I was using Pachmyr grippers, but have only had 30/30, .44 mag and .223 barrels.  I've got a 45-70 on the way from one of the members here.  I read somewhere that the Pachmyrs weren't suitable for this?  Anyone know why?  I have the standard rhynite grip, and will start with that.  Thanks!

For high recoil I prefer wood grips, the rubber grips tend to grab your hand and carry the recoil, while the wood tends to allow a little slippage. Now for quick shooting and mid-recoil guns I do prefer rubber

I have found that a weightlifters glove with the padded palm and open fingers works very well for me to help the felt recoil.

Thanks for the input.  I'll try a glove, and may order a set of laminated grips/forend.

Catahoula, I had s Pachmyr grip on my Contender and bent the stud that holds it on. I then ordered a stud from SSK Industries and it broke after several years of shooting. I then installed a grade 8 screw and it bent after a few more years. I took the Pachmyr grip off and installed a Rynite grip and haven't had any more problems. All of this was with my 338 JDJ#2 and I feel like a warm loaded 45-70 would be even harder on the grip stud.

GOOD SHOOTING!
