You can run into problems at ramps.  I was leaving a state owned boat ramp a few years ago with my then 13 year old son and his friend.  A drunk punk that I corrected earlier for operating in an unsafe manner decieded to jump out of his boat and run toward me yelling he was "going to break my hip old man".  As he got near I put out my left arm and went for my 357 with my right.  He froze like a deer in headlights.  Goes to show most problems will be resolved soon as the idiot knows you are armed.  I have never seen him at that lake again.

In Illinois, your act was assault and a felony?

I almost always carry a sidearm when I am fishing, it is usually my Ruger Super Single Six with a couple rounds or snake shot and the rest regular ammo in the summer, hollowpoints in the colder months in case a squirrel or rabbit gives me a shot, kind of hillbilly surf and turf, when fishing creeks and rivers. When fishing from the boat, my Glock 22 or 27 gets the nod loaded with hydra-shoks.  I have used the Ruger many times, always to kill a snake or other animal. I have never needed the Glock when fishing and I hope I never do, but the next time may be the time.  As far as mikedb's post, it may be a felony in Illinois but in several states that I am aware of his actions were perfectly justified so that is why it is critical to know the law where you are at because doing something you think is Ok could wind up ruining your life.

In Michigan, guns are banned on the water.  Even with a CCW, you cannot carry a gun on a boat.  And if I want to fish from the shore, I'm fine.  If I put on waders and step into the stream, I cannot have a gun on me.  It's a carry over from the DNR (department of natural resources) that bans guns on state land (yes, they call it 'state land' rather than public land!) other than at hunting season.  That way they could say if you were on state land with a firearm and it was not hunting season, they can assume you are poaching without the burden of proof.  You are not allowed a firearm for several days before deer season opens or during archery season.  If you were to go and fire a few shots to check out your new rifle two days before deer season, you run the risk of having your firearm confiscated and being ticketed.  They finally gave in that you could carry with a concealed carry permit during these times, but if you get stopped and checked, you darn well better be carrying a gun that cannot easily be construed as a 'hunting' arm rather than a 'defensive' arm.  So as for the idea of a fishing gun, forget it!  44 Man

here it's if-e but still here in FL( we have stand your ground law) i think you can't draw on someone unless they really mean to harm you. If someone is just mad most times there no need to draw( i have run into people like that to and most times if i say i have a gun or pull up my shirt showing it they get the point) i was told never to draw you weapon(knife, bat, gun, or whatever) unless your ready to kill that person and also there 3 people and one guy just for pulling a gun like that would look bad. but what do i know i am "just a kid" as so many have said.

your posts kill me.  between you killing all those coyotes with a 380, and various other adventures,  i truely dont know where to start.   if indeed you are running around with these pistols,  and a minor,  i am about sure that is against the law.   i know various other "stories" you have told,  many things you claimed to have done had to have been illegal.
overall, i guess i will say that i think you are a kid with a very big imagination,  and i would encourage you to think twice about the whole gun possesion thing, as i think a kid with your outlook is without question is a huge liabiity. running into a kid like you is one of my biggest nightmares.  you have no idea what it is that you do or how it may affect others.  i also encourage you to think about where all this might land you.
and i might add that if your parents do let you run around with a gun,  they ought to be kicked in the @$$.

That law was changed a few years ago withthe passage of Hb 129 and 130.  If you have a CPL you can carry on state land.  You can cary on water.  The new law took all authority away from the DNR to  regulate CPL holders.  The ask the DNR website has old answers on it that have not been modified due to lack of funds.  Ask me why I knw.  I work for the DEQ.

Not here.  Any closer it would have been a justified shooting.

You are correct.  I am 55 and partially disabled.  He was drunk in his 20s and running at me yelling he was going to do great bodily harm.  All I need.  If he kept coming I knew he was going down.

The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind

It all depends on me, what ever hits my fancy I guess. It could be a Ruger 22 auto, 4" Security 6, S&W Sigma 40s&w, Taurus Ti 44 spl 2" or Ruger BH 45 LC 4.5". Probably best to take what you are comfortable with and can shoot well.

And if I were to fish with a gun I think a Buntline would work best. ;D

i haven't shot fish but one river in Va has carp that come to the top and part of their head or body is exposed and folks shoot them , only one river is open to such !
as far as a carry gun , revolver with what ever shot will deal with the threat you fear !
sometimes its a 45colt/410 derringer ! talk about lighting up the night !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
