i know lots of people say the 380AUTO is a light gun and the guns for it are bad but for fishing or if you just need a gun they do. Guns like the Jimenez Arms J.A. .380 ,.cobra pistols, accu-tek HC-380., and others have been worn for fishing guns and carry guns. Most shoot pretty well and will take HP rounds and not jam. I have a 1934 and it will shoot +p rounds and i have used it for killing coyotes and sometimes snakes. Anyways what kind of gun do you carry for fishing??

When I lived in Homestead Fl., I carried my Dan Wesson 357mag with a 2" barrel and 38 wadcutters. With the gun in a hip holster I didn't have to speak a foreign language to be left alone especially while night fishing.

dont know if a 380 would handle an upstream charge. Id go with at least a 454

there not much really anything in my area(tarpon springs - st.pete,FL) that my 380 can't take. the mag holds nine and there a mix of FMJ and HP in there. Now if there was bears,hogs, or other stuff like that i would have the Taurus Judge.

We've got some pretty tough catfish down here along the Mississippi River. Big suckers, too. I wouldn't trust a .380 to stop one! I wouldn't use anything less than a .357! Plus the .380 loses velocity (and energy) pretty quick in water over 3 feet deep. Not a great fishing caliber.

Bullets won't cause damage to a fish past about 8 inches down, the energy expands into the water. Use a bow.

And what is your question?

For killing fish?

For protection from people?

How about potting a squirrel or rabbit in the fall during legal season, to have with the fish for dinner? Pretty common practice, here in central Illinois.

sorry about that i mean by fishing gun, something carry for both protection from animals and people and maybe a little can shooting. If you were shooting fish in the water a large, slow moving bullets are better then a fast bullet.

well sometimes it's fun but you need some thing with a very slow moving bullet or they can come back at you or hit someone else. Yes, i have shot at fish with a .22LR,380, and slingshot and the slingshot was the only thing that didn't go all over the place. most states (i thing here to) its not legal and it's dumb to do anyways and make shooters look bad(look at the box for bullets,airguns, and slingshots and they all say don't fire into or at water).

i used to do that, but stopped because the bullets will not hit there mark, unsure if it was illegal or not, and i didn't know were they were landing at. Slingshots, bows and spears are the safe way to go for shooting fish.

In the spring, I use my old Onieda bow for shooting carp but, I like to carry my Mountain Gun along for copperheads and moccacins(loaded with homemade shot cartridges).

I have been reading this with interest and getting a laugh also.
I carried a stainless .380 Walther when bay fishing.
I have a friend who carries a .480??/.454---I can never remember the caliber---the one that will take a .410---for snakes and other stuff like that.
I am not sure I want too shoot a snake in the boat---but then I have never had a snake in the boat.
I like his choice of gun though and the .410 does make good sense----I think he likes it for getting the boat out of the boat house early in the AM---I do understand varmints and snakes in boat houses in the morning---gators also.
I think protection while fishing is a good idea.
In one of the bays around Houston---East Matagora (if anyone has any idea where that is--or cares)--- a few years ago there was a rash of thefts and armed robberies by some of the rats that lived around there--and friends started arming theirownselves pretty heavily--which seemed too put a stop to all that foolishness.

People will see a pond and they will trespass and not think anything of it and you sometimes will run across someone who wants to disagree and say they have permission or something like this. Now this one got me about 3 months ago this old drunk was fishing in my pond which is hidden behind some trees and you can barely see it. He decided he wanted to go fishing so he trespassed on it and I happened to be going at the same time and I yelled over to him that he needed to leave and he was trespassing and he wouldn't leave so I walked up he said that my land and pond was his and that I was on his land and told me to leave and at this point he's reaching for a knife and I pulled out the Ruger and said you need to leave and he left and the last I have heard of him.

man, you guys carry big guns(a 454 or 480???) i just keep my 380 for dogs(a pack of gray-hounds attacked a 86 year old man and killed one of his dogs, it been all over the news) and for just shooting stuff if the fishing's no good.

.380 ammo is expensive. That's why its one of my home defense guns and not my fishing gun.

I agree, must be geographical. Maybe in their part of the country the big ones are necessary but, not where I live.

30.06 how does .480 and .454 ammo compare to .380 ACP in your part of the country? Where do you live, Alaska?

there is one place in Va. you could shoot carp with a 22 rim fire .
but its classified hunting not fishing same with frogs !
as far as me - a J frame with some snake shot , or 45/410 derringer . or both !

a fishing gun sounds like a football bat

I like in South Carolina but fish in some bear country in the upstate. Some places where I fish there are many bears but I don't really worry about them. I pay $30 a box of 50 380acp. I don't know about 480 or 454 because I don't own any guns that use that ammo. 44mag is all I need. I could probably get by with a 380 but I don't shoot hollow points. And I fish on some public land that you can hunt also so during deer season I can fish and hunt at the same time. I took a doe this year while I was fishing but that was on some of my land in the mountains. I have a 500s&w and a box of it is about $50 for a box of 20 and that's for hog hunting in the low state so I am guessing 454 and 480 ammo cost about the same.

Well, here in Tennessee it's illegal to lasso fish. (Yep, there's actually a law that says so.) I don't know about shootin' 'em.

Once had a gar get himself all wrapped around my line about three feet from the hook. It looked like he had been roped somehow. Glad nobody outside the boat saw it. I'd a hated to have been arrested for lassoing a worthless gar. My partner freaked out and beat it to death with a paddle. He'd a shot it if he'd had a gun. Good thing it was his boat. Wouldn't want any bullet holes in my boat. He must've had a bad experience with a gar when he was a young buck. Never saw a growed man go bonkers over a fish like that before.

I did shoot a snake in the water once with a .38 using CCI shot shells. Shot him twice at about 6 feet away, and it just made him mad. He swam off. Now he may have been sore the next morning, but at the time it didn't even slow him down. I was underwhelmed with the shot shells.

Had better luck with a 125-gr. .357 SP. Didn't actually hit the snake, but It came so close it knocked him out. We were so surprised when we couldn't find a scratch on him. Then we realized we wuz handling a live water moccasin that could wake up at any instant and not be a good mood. He did wake up a short time after we set him down, but there was enough concentrated fire that he didn't get very far.

Sorry. I digressed from shootin' fish. Can't say I've actually tried shootin' one. It sounds like it would be fun, however. You'd kinda have to be high up so you could sees 'em in the water better. And also so ya wouldn't ricochet.

You can run into problems at ramps. I was leaving a state owned boat ramp a few years ago with my then 13 year old son and his friend. A drunk punk that I corrected earlier for operating in an unsafe manner decieded to jump out of his boat and run toward me yelling he was "going to break my hip old man". As he got near I put out my left arm and went for my 357 with my right. He froze like a deer in headlights. Goes to show most problems will be resolved soon as the idiot knows you are armed. I have never seen him at that lake again.
