Extractor to Ejector Conversion?
« on: December 14, 2007, 12:02:47 PM »
After a chat with customer service, it is obvious NEF is not going to offer any help converting an extractor to ejector.  Seems you cannot even order the parts and do it yourself.  And, I was told that if you send in an ejector barrel in for service, they convert it to extractor without you having any choice.  Has anyone out there been able to make that conversion yet?

It's been discussed several times, but hasn't been done by anyone yet, see the 2nd generation extractor thread in the FAQs. All of the ejector parts can be ordered from Brownell's.

Pretty much, although a broken spring or gummed up ejector may act like an extractor, but the big difference is extractors are positive, it's mechanical in nature with the leverage of the length of the barrel to remove a case from the chamber, ejectors rely solely on the spring to push it out, usually with enough momentum to throw it right over the shooters shoulder, while extractors just lift the case out about ¼" or so, and it must be manually removed the rest of the way.

I wouldn't take that to the bank, no one has had that done yet, I'm waiting on verification that H&R has decided to take that route. Although the conversion is very easy to do, but it will still be a spring powered extractor, the worst of both worlds. :'(

Did they do away from the ejector for potential legal reasons?
I notice with my 17HMR Sportster that if I'm not paying attention when
I break open the action after firing to reload that the spent case whizzes
right past my ear and lands about 10 feet behind me. For me it's no big
deal. I always wear eye and hearing protection when I shoot, but many
shooters don't. Is H&R afraid of someone getting a hot spent shell stuck in
their eye and sue them?

Although I'd rather have an ejector and I have both, I must add that empty cartridges will and have flattened a few tractor and truck tires so its not a good idea to leave them in farm tillable fields anyway.   For other areas or target practice, I'll take an ejector and learn to blink my eye ;)

H&R said they would be converting ALL of their firearms to extractors starting over 3yrs ago, the 204 Ruger in mid 2004 was one of the first, right now, with a couple exceptions of existing inventory, ALL centerfire rifle barrels are extractors, their original intent was for shotgun and rimfires to follow, although that hasn't happened yet, at least no one has reported an extractor shotgun or rimfire so far.

You can't be serious!!  That's got to be the stupidest thing I ever heard....EXTRACTOR shotgun barrels ??? If they actually go through with those plans, you might just as well STICK A FORK IN 'EM 'cause they'll be done.  Chalk another one up for the GUN BANNERS!

Just my 2 cents

In an e-mail reply to my question from H&R..."The company changed to extraction for many reasons the main one being that there are so many kinds of ammo out in the world now with varied dimensions and inexpensive ammo that we felt extraction would work with less problems."

The reason quoted to me by the very nice customer service lady on the phone during a follow up call..."They have received complaints of shooters being burned."

I asked to speak to someone higher up in the "food chain" to get some additional information.  She transferred me to "Gordon".  I left a voice mail message, but have not received a return call yet.

Why is it such a big deal that they are now or will be extractor only?  I don't see it as that big of a deal even for hunting after all it is a single shot.  I have used both and sometimes found it annoying with the ejectors hitting me in the face and when reloading shells, trying find them in the field.  No biggie to me.

I can't agree more on the above statement as long as the spent empty case comes out of the chamber that what counts.
I think let see 43 years of deer hunting with my A3-03 Springfield custom I never fired more then one bullet when hunting
matter a fact only keep one extra in the clip.
I think my new 2007 model 38-55 has the extractor in it hey 38-55 brass is not cheap I would too loose one over the shoulder in the high weeds

I don't really have a problem with rifles being extractor.  My problem would be with SHOTGUNS and rimfires.  That's what I was referring to in my post earlier.

I know alot of folks here really like the ejectors.
I am a newbie to the handi-rifles and mine has an extractor, but I've been shooting a Contender pistol for 19 years and have become very familiar with an extractor. I also got into Cowboy Action Shooting back in 1997 and use a double barrel shotgun, the rules of the game won't allow ejectors in the doubles. So I guess you could say that I have become very comfortable with extractors and I like them.

Well, I shoot SASS Cowboy Action Shooting.  I want an ejector barrel specifically for a class of competition where I must shoot a single shot rifle on a stage.  Having an ejector barrel would allow me to reload faster.  In another division, you must use only an extractor in a single shot rifle.  So, for me at least, I'd like the the option.  My situation is unsual.  I agree that for most hunting or target use, it should not make any difference ejector vs. extractor.

I hope that frames my desire for the flexibility.

I got an answer from Marlin/H&R on this subject, they only replace an ejector barrel with an extractor barrel IF the barrel needs to be replaced, they don't convert existing ejectors to extractors. Marlin doesn't make ejector rifle barrels any more, only extractors, so if a barrel needs to be replaced, it will be an extractor barrel unless it's one of the few chamberings that they still have ejector barrels in stock, IE: 450 Marlin and 223 Superlight, as of  July anyway, until they use em up.

Ejectors are  great, and I personally don't have a problem keeping my face out of the way of ejected shells.
What sucks is when an "ejector" fails to even "extract".
This has happened to me ,and I had to pick it out with a pocket knife!
That'll slow down yer second shot!
Give me an extractor,at least I know that sucker's comin' out.

Here's to H&R for keepin' it handi! 8)
