« on: December 14, 2007, 03:34:01 PM »
ran across a remington 600 mohawk in 308. wondering what is an attainable velocity with 150grain loads? just looking for a ballpark figure. i was thinking maybe 2700fps? any ideas?

I'd say you are really close because I have a 16" barreled Competitor pistol chambered in 308 Win and I get a little over 2600 with 150's.

GOOD SHOOTING!

It is very feasible to attain 2,700 with the 150, but if it wound up being 2,650-2,675 no biggie.

Here is a great 308 article with vel. data from long tubes down to 20", it will give you an idea what to expect.

A good friend of mine was getting 2,650 fps with 150 grainers in an 18.5" barrelled Remington M-788.  Interestingly enough, we chronographed the same ammo in another guy's  24" M-700 heavy barrel and got the same speed.  ???

The late Jeff Cooper had  a Rem 600 which was a starting base for his "scout concept". He got 2700 fps out of a 150 gr. spitzer with (I believe) 43 gr. of 3031.

I have only loaded for 1 short barreled .308 and it is a Ruger 77 RSI with 18" barrel.  I have barely been able to crack 2700 fps with 150 gr bullets, and am more comfortable running 2650 fps.

"Load from a Disk" software says over 2700fps is attainable in a 308Win with an 18.5" barrel. I ran some numbers using RL-15 and H380 powder and the pressures were running in the 52,000CUP area at that velocity. Remembering that all rifles are entities unto themselves, that may or may not be a problem. Work it up slowly, and listen to your rifle. They'll quite often let you know when they are getting warm.

If I were you I would get a hold of a conagraph. It been my exprence that each rifle will shoot different.
