thumbhole vs straight

hey everybody,  im new to the forum . was wondering  if anybody has tried both stocks on the pro hunter and is there any difference in felt recoil. ive noticed less rubber on the thole. im planning on buying the thumbhole soon, any advise would be appreciated

I love my thumb hole stock, and it works... It still recoils but the energy is transformed from a quick kick to more of a long push. Which makes it more comfortable. Id buy it again if that says anything!

My old stock was the straight style and didn't have the recoil dampening. Recoil was no joy with heavy hitters.

I know a few people will say they don't like the thumbhole on a hunting rifle, but it shoulders very naturally for me. I don't have a pro hunter but I do have a 209-50 with a thunbhole and ordered a thumbhole stocked 11-87.

I had a thumbhole stock and didn't care for it. It seemed to hold different than the straight stock and slowed down quick shots . You have to pull thumb out of stock,open scope caps ,cock rifle and then put thumb back in hole. Standard stock was one smooth movment.

I agree with southernutah. I have both the thumb hole and the straight stock and I much prefer the straight stock. I just didn't care for the feel of the thumb hole. It just felt awkward  taking my thumb out of the hole to cock the hammer. As far as recoil goes I didn't really notice any difference in the two. The straight stock is basically a thumb hole stock,without the hole. I suggest you go to a gun shop or gun show that has both and try them for yourself and judge which one fits you the best.                          Dan

I have the thumbhole synthetic stock with Limb Saver and I love it. I started as a pistol shooter and for me the grip provided by the thumbhole feels better. I use it for everything from the 204 Ruger to the 375 H&H.

   The thumb hole stocks work for me.

   I have several short barrels in the 20/24" range. The thumb hole stock seems to give me better control of the gun.

I can see that for sure. I built up a 10-22 and put a thumbhole on it and my thumb sat right on the edge from where they bored the hole. Nothing a rattail file couldn't take care of though.

I personally prefer the THUMB-HOLE stock. I do not think it slows my reaction time for cock and shoot at all. They do take a little getting use to. I also think the STINGER stock gives a better scope to eye alignment than most. And this could just be me but felt recoil seams to be less.

Encore with a 26" tapered 280Rem. barrel from FRO.



And if you really want a fantastic feel cut finger grooves into the grip!!

TC Dave 1,     Beautiful arsenal. What do you use as a finish on your stocks? I built a Contender carbine in .204 Ruger and 209 x 50 ML using  Gunstocks Inc. wood and love them.

Standard for hunting...........the last 4/6 bucks that I killed, I killed with my support hand.  I don't like to shoot off hand....but can, and it has been very necessary i don't know if i could have got turned around without spooking the deer for any of the 4.  for a target gun it may not be necessary.  or maybe if you sit in a field.

If you hunt from some type of blind or know 100% where the deer will come from and set your self up for it then a normal thumb hole stock will work with no troubles

If you are hunting from a tree stand and shots can come from any place a normal thumb hole stock will be more a hindrance then a help. now IF You can get an ambidextrous stock then go for the thumb hole stock good for control and can switch up as needed.

I hunt mostly from a tree stand and have to take allot of shots from both sides this requires me to switch shoulders a normal thumb hole stock would not work.
