K98 serial number questions

Can anyone tell me if the K98 rifle S\N's begin with an actual "K". This may be a "stupid" question as I have never held one of these rifles to look at the S\N. Now, I do believe the K98 is different than the 98K aka the model 48. But did both rifles shoot 8mm?
