Need identification and price check on a handi
« on: December 15, 2007, 10:08:36 AM »
I ran in to a used handi today in .280  It has a laminate stock set with a gold rocky mountain elk foundation medallion in the stock.  The serial number is not the standard N# or H# prefix, it is RMEF####.  Do you know what year it was made?  And how many were made?  It has a 280 ejector barrel - 26".  I thought the RMEF guns were all .35 whelen.
Ive looked through the FAQ's and see that Quick has a RMEF .35 that is a 1996.  Were these all '96 models or did they make RMEF guns for several years?
Thanks for your help in advance.

The barrel has a few scratches in the blueing, but the frame and stock are spotless.  It has a scope rail, a hammer spur and cin lam stocks.  Is $200 too steep? or should I go buy it before someone else does?

The only way to know what year it was made is to ask H&R, another member just bought a .280 RMEF,  the RMEF has been available in both 280 and 35 Whelen.

I called the gun shop back.  They said on the right side of the frame it has engraved "1996 sponsor edition".  I can't believe I missed that.  The barrel says SB2 Ultra, but according to your reply in that link above H&R won't fit " * " barrels to this frame?

edit - Nevermind I just answered my own question it is pre 1999.  Oh well, I think Ill go buy it anyway.  I wont send this one in for any other barrels.

I don't think I've ever read about a .280 H&R that didn't shoot good, getting one with laminated stock for $200 sounds very reasonable. ;)

I also think that was a great buy. I have 2 NEF/H&R .280's and they are both fine shooters, congratulations....<><....:)

You lucky S.O.B.  ;D

If you were in my shoes and I'd passed it up, I'd be kicking myself for years!

The RMEF in the post Quick referred you to is now mine.  Cost me $228 & change to have it delivered to my FFL.  I'm glad mine is a '95; same year my daughter was born.  She's scored twice with her 7mm-08 Handi this year too.
Cordially,

Well, I brought her home today.
After going back to the gun shop, I learned that it did not include a weaver rail, so I talked the price down to 190.  I pity the guy who probably got $100 in trade-in for this nice gun.

Upon closer inspection, it has a polished chamber and there is an O-ring under the forend stud.  I can't wait to get it out to the range.

If you want you can check the number (3 digits) on the left side of the barrel lug (remove the barrel ti read the number) against the last 3 digits of the serial number to check if the barrel either came with the gun or was fitted to the gun by the factory....<><....:)

Yes they match, and an interesting side note... This frame only has a 4 digit number and the barrel has 3 numbers stamped.  All my newer handi rifles with a normal serial prefix have a 6 digit number.

This barrel has the 3 digit number STAMPED in the side of the underlug.  All my newer barrels have the 3 digit number engraved by hand with a power engraving pen.  That may be a good way to identify older barrels by stamped numbers vs engraved.  Anyone know what year they switched?

This gets even better...  ;D    When I was in the gun shop, I saw a topper deluxe on the rack.  I thought it was odd to see a topper with a cin lam stock, but  I was not really interested in another shotgun, so I walked right past it. I learned this morning that in 1996, the RMEF banquets gave away a matched set of the .280 handi and a topper deluxe 12 gauge.   It didn't even dawn on me before that the 12ga was part of a set.
So... Im off to the gun shop at lunch time to buy ANOTHER handi.

Info on the matched set...

That's sweet!!   Congrats on a great find.  Got a lot of 4 leaf clovers in your area, do ya?

I gotta start walking into more gunshops.  Although, I'm certain my better half would disagree!!  ;)
