What bullets for 7.62X54R?
« on: December 15, 2007, 10:55:56 AM »
I can't seem to find bullets for reloading 7.62.54r.  Depending on what I read, no one even seems to agree what the proper bullet diameter is.  What do you guys use?

You really have to slug your barrel. The Finns are .308, I have not had any problem using 303 enfield bullets in my Russian MN's. In fact after slugging 2 and finding the bores between .311-.312, I dindn't bother to slug my newest one and just use the .311 bullets. I really like to use the 125 gr sp's designed for the 7.62x39 in my m44. I load them to about 27000fps for a real nice low recoil load, I also like to use cast bullets sized.313 in it.

A Russian M44 is what I'll be loading for.  You just use the bullets for 7.62x39, and they're OK?  I don't expect the thing to be a tack driver, but I got it to give to my son for Christmas, and I want to make sure I don't do anything unsafe.

my Finn is .311
my SIG mdl 1891 is 310
my other assorted 4 are between .310 and 314.
Slug the bore to be sure..

How do you go about slugging the bore?  Do I need to buy a gauge?

I took a 32cal lead round ball and dowel.
Complete pass through the bore than measured the lands and groves that where left on the ball. Mine was .311.
Are you can get a slug kit from midway are another place.

How do you get those 125s that fast without recoil?  I feel recoil at only 3000 fps.  27000?   :-[

I have two that like the RCBS 165 Silhouette bullet.  I size .311 and shoot.  They will break up clay pigeons and pieces there of as far as I can see them.  Have not had problems out to 200 yards with full size clays and larger pieces.  When they get hard to see they get missed.  Then I pull out a scoped gun to finish them off.
