Ideal bullet for Freedom Arms 45LC
« on: December 15, 2007, 02:18:38 PM »
I am interested wish to order a mold for my Freedom Arms model 1997, 45 Long Colt 5 1/2" barrel.  This limits my OAL to a maximum of 1.630".  The cylinder diameter is a fraction over .452", seemingly standard for Freedom Arms.

The pistol’s purpose is whitetail deer hunting but I do a lot more target practice, about 4,000 rounds a year.  My maximum hunting distance is about 100 yards.

The 1997 model is light and I can only tolerate about 50 rounds with a 300gr bullet at 1100 fps or a 250 at 1250 fps.  For practice I want and hunting I want something with a little less recoil.

What do you think the ideal mold would be for my purpose?

A 260 gr WFN would make you extremely happy, loaded to a tolerable recoil level for your playing, and bump the speed to 1200 fps for hunting, so it kills like the hammer of Thor.  If you are real good with a revolver and well experienced with deer hunting, so a little run doesn't bother you so far as recovering the deer, 1000 fps loads will do very nicely, and a few customers have reported complete joy with as little as 900 fps loads.  But they are very experienced hunters.
