Stevens 22/.410 question
« on: December 17, 2007, 12:08:50 AM »
Hi,
I just picked up a Stevens 22/.410 with Tennite stock. Under the barrel in front of where the serial number should be there is a "K" stamped. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before ?
                           Thanks, Jon.

"K" is the Savage year-code, for when the gun was made - 1959.

SAVAGE / STEVENS DATE CODES

A 1949      B 1950      C 1951

D 1952     E 1953     F 1954

G 1955      H 1956      I 1957

J 1958      K 1959      L 1960

M 1961      N 1962      P 1963

R 1964      S 1965      T 1966

U 1967      V 1968      W 1969

Thanks, but its a 1939 Stevens , a mate of mine has one the same. His has a serial number but mine does not. Where his serial number is , in front of the underlug is different to mine. Mine has a machined flat. in front of that is the letter K, with serrif.
                            Thanks, Jon.

Thanks for the link, as you can see my Stevens is identical to the one in the photo.
It can't be a 1959 model as Stevens was gone by 1950.
 Thanks for your help, Jon..

[Stevens was gone by 1950.]

Don't be so sure.  Savage's owned the Stevens name since 1920, and they still occasionally put it on something, when it behooves them. As witness the very recent Stevens Model 200 C.F. econo-boltgun.

So, really, "Stevens Arms" has been "gone" for 87 years - yet here we have all these pesky two year old and fifty year old Stevens rifles & shotguns.

1939 is argueably (some experts say 1938) the first year of Stevens 22/410 production, and I haven't ever seen one made  prior to GCA-68 with a serial number - just assembly numbers, which are often mistaken for serial numbers.

Thanks for the info, that puts it into perspective.
The Stevens 22/410 is relatively rare here in Australia, the only other one I know of belongs to a friend of mine and his has English proof marks.
Savage combo's are a lot more common.
                                Regards Jon
