Barrel stud shim info.
« on: December 17, 2007, 06:59:58 AM »
I recently bought a Versa-Pack. The synthetic fore-end does not fit either barrel worth a darn. The o-ring trick does not work very well with the synthetic fore-end due to the way the fore-end is molded. Washers and the like proved useless as well. I did however have on hand some very tough and hard leather approx. 3/16" thick. I cut several pieces into rectangles that measured about 3/4" x 1". I then trimmed to fit the fore-end. I then drilled a hole into the center of the leather piece so that it fit tightly onto the barrel stud. I then stacked the leather shims to achieve the fit I was looking for. I even split one in half thickness wise to get the proper thickness. I did coat the leather with Hoppes storage grease where it came into contact with the metal. Accuracy improved greatly with the .22lr barrel. Group size shrunk in half! I believe this works because the leather is firm enough to be an effective spacer but not hard like steel/brass washers or too  flimsy like rubber o-rings (o-rings may be the ticket for wood fore-ends but not synthetic!). Just though I'd pass this along.

The FAQs has several methods of bedding the forend, leather has been mentioned as well as different rubber products. The best method I've found is to use a pillar under the forend stud to float the barrel, easy to do and works well on even the finicky Superlight .243. ;)
