Slideshow of light artillery at Ft. McHenry, with drawings
« on: December 18, 2007, 10:07:21 AM »
The drawings were done by one E.N. Rich in 1960.  As far as I know they've never been published, at least as far as dimensioned drawings.

The 9" Spanish mortar should be back with new walnut transoms this weekend, we'll post a pic of it then.  I'm still looking for shells that are about 9.5 in. diameter.

Meanwhile, just for Lance, I gathered up some misc. mortar pix that have come in from the web and various emails.

The bed of my mortar is identical to the one shown in the 2nd picture, which, like most mortar beds of that model, is now missing all of the wood transoms and bolster.  You can see the recessed area in the bed sideplate casting into which the wood transom blocks fit.  The restorer made a jig and put the huge walnut block on a Bridgeport to make accurate cuts so it would fit the bed sideplate's recessed areas exactly.
