Do I really have to???
« on: December 19, 2007, 07:33:54 PM »
Hey all, I know I know, This was supposed to get sent to HnR last year about this same time but it never made it. I have been so busy with school and work that I hardly have time to sqeeze in what fun I do have. Anyway, I was just out in my lil shop there and found it all boxed up just waiting for me or dad to send it out. Ya as you can see it aint happend yet. Anyways, i got to taken pics of all my handis tonight and figured that i should take a shot of it with its other kin and ended up checking her out again, The so called "crack" in the breach face doesnt look like a crack anymore, it looks more like a deep hole from a hot flame. I dunno, you guys check er out thats why i took more pics. Sure would be a bummer if I waited all this time to send er out and she is shootable like she is. But if yall think she needs to go to the doc then say the word. Let me know what you fellas think.
Hank.

That doesn't look good at all, you'd best get it replaced. ;)

A Handi fireing pin comes down from an angle, I would say it is a crack, the top part of the fireing pin hole is thinner than the bottom due to the angle of the pin hole, my bet is it was cracked by dry fireing it.  I forgit, what type of frame is it?  Larry

The large firing pin hole and the rough milling on the face looks like a shotgun receiver.  The brass ring left behind looks like a rifle diameter case.   What barrel was on this?

Folks, this is an SB2, the barrel is .243. no i8 dont think it was from dryfiring it, It had something to do with a bad primer or something. I tried finding my old post about it from last year but got lost on the way. LOL It was a fairly hot load as i recall, I wish I could find the brass so i could take another pic. Well boys, as it stands its getting sent out tom morn!

That was easy to find, all ya have to do is look in your profile, down at the bottom of the page, hit Show the last posts of this person and scroll thru em until ya find it. Hopefully the search will be enabled soon, I think the new server is almost ready if not already online, there were some serious problems happening last night.

Handi243, Thats what i was thinking too. At first we all thought it was a crack but now with closer inspection it looks like a gash from a hot flame. I have tried emailing H&R two differnt times, Dont know what the deal is but guess i will have to give em a call tom and see what they can do for me.

Thanks for the post quick, I learn somthin new everyday on here!

I once bought a rifle set -used- that had a 12ga barrel and a 44Mag barrel fitted up. The receiver face looked similar to what yours does. Turns out it was an SB-1 receiver that the previous owner fitted up and didn't tell me about. Best I could figure was he was shooting some hot 44Mag loads through it. The receiver face has what looks like a curved dent near the firing pin. I don't think this SB-1 could hold up to the pressure.
Perhaps your SB-2 didn't get the full heat treatment as it should have :-\
Just a thought.

It looks to me like it was caused by shooting a reduced load that had the powder fall forward in the case . Check out reduced loads in A.O Akcley's books . I have a bit of a time understanding it all but  by all the pictures and such that's what it appears to me as. Correct me if I'm wrong but take a look first. Kurt
