Opinions on the most accurate bolt 243
« on: June 25, 2003, 09:38:02 AM »
I am condsidering the purchase of a 243 and am looking for opinions on who makes the most accurate non-custom gun.

I am already considering a CZ 550 American or a Rem 700. Any others ?

Thanks

Tikka!

I have a Tikka Whitetail Hunter Stainless Synthetic in .243 and it shoots 3/4" groups at 100 yards with cheap ammo on a fairly windy day!

Here it comes . . . the Tikka rollcall.  You cannot beat an out of the box Tikka for accuracy.

I have the same gun with the same scope, except that the gun is stainless.  It's interesting how many people, not just us, find the Nikon Monarch 3x-9x-40mm as a perfect match to the gun!! :D

I'd sure look at the Tikka rifle.  I don't own one (I have a Sako heavy barreled .222 varmint rifle), but from everything I've read... posts in three different forums and at net sites... the Tikka is an "economy-priced" Sako and the barrels for both the Tikka and the Sako rifles are taken out of the same storage place.

I also understand that the factory "guarantees" groups of one inch or less at 100 yards (less than a minute of angle).

I understand that a new Tikka rifle's prices start at about $550.

Actually, you can get them for a lot less.  On Gunbroker, you can find some NIB rifles as low as $399!!

Considering all the new rifles I've seen at the range that others have bought I would have to say the most accurate rifle out of the box would most likely be a Savage.  No I don't own one but I keep thinking about maybe buying one.  I've watched over a dozen new Savage's show up at the club range and almost every one shoots under an inch out of the box.  People say they're ugly but I say any rifle that can shoot like them is a thing of beauty.  Lawdog

Tikka first, Savage second, but a Nikon Monarch 3X9X40mm on top of it and you can't go wrong.

Local prices here for Tikka T3's

Wood/blued $479
Blued/Syn $449
Stainless/Syn $499

I bought a stainless/syn T3 in .243---but haven't shot it yet---so can't comment on the accuracy yet----fixing that situation this weekend.

Last Whitetail Hunter I saw a few months ago---blued/wood---was a beautifull .270 for $499------I should have bought it--but I had magnumitis at the time----when I went back--it was gone.

I'm not saying that Tikka rifles are not accurate but I've been to their web site and went through it from one end to the other, even downloaded their Owners manuals, I'm unable to find their guarantee on MOA accuracy anywhere.  Could someone tell me where I can find this guarantee so I can read it for myself?  The best WRITTEN GUARANTEE for accuracy that I can find is still Weatherby's 1 1/2".  Lawdog

Don't know about the web---but the literature contained with my T3 states that it must shoot an inch or less group before it leaves the factory.

Actually, the Tikka 1" guarantee is a misnomer.  Although Tikkas shoot 1" or better groups, Tikka does not "guarantee" that.

Rather, if you read the brochures, it clearly states something along the lines of "Each Tikka rifle must shoot 1" groups or better at 100 yards before leaving the factory."

Somehow someone equated this with a guarantee.  Legally and technically, it is not accurate.  What is accurate, however, is their rifles.

I agree on the Tikka as number 1 but also check out Savage and see which you like better. Their new Acu-trigger is sweet. I would have to say that a Zeiss conquest is a better scope than a monarch if you can afford it.
the conquest is chopping into vari-x III maket share like a hot knife through butter. I read about 6 boards and I would say 7-8 out of 10 people prefer the conquest over the vx-III. These are people that have owned both. The Monarch is a good scope as well but I believe it to be a step below unless you are looking at the monarch gold.

Anyone of you tried the Swiss arms rifles?

In my opinion there isn't a rifle that shoots better than the Tikka (factory made that is), The remington 722 shoots a pretty tight group though.

Of the two you have named the REM will be the most acurate out of the box but the CZ also will be very good after some work.
From personal exspereince SAKO will smoke a TIKA any day. After all TIKA is just a cheap SAKO any way.For less money go with the REM,they
are proven,The CZ will need work to get the best out of it,But it is still a darn fine rifle.BEST OF LUCK,,JACK

If you could stand the ugly and the rougher fit and finish, the Savage was probably the best buy in accuracy out there, but their price is going up.  Nowadays, for the about the same price, or just a few dollars more, you can get the Tikka, and the fit and finish is a LOT better than the Savage, and accuracy just as good.  That Savage Accu-Trigger is sure slicker than snot on a glass doorknob, but I'd still rather have the Tikka.

I've got a Ruger #1A in .243, and out of the box it shot nice 18 to 24 inch patterns with lots of different ammo.  :x    Then I cut a piece of .030" brass shim stock and put it between the forearm hanger and the forearm and the groups dropped to 3/4" to 7/8" with several different factory loads and handloads.

I had a Rem 788 that would shoot nickel sized groups with 60gr hp. My wifes model 7 will shoot under an inch and thats with a 181/2" barrel!

My son's Tikka is shooting 1/2"groups with 60gr and 58 gr bullets and that was new out of the box!

My sako has turned in a .250 inch moa more than a few times. I use to have a remington 700 that shot good too in 25/06 but the new ones have that cheep a$$ extractor that always gets loose.

I don't want to step on toes but, unless you are target shooting off of a bench, 99.9% of all .243's are more accurate than your ability or any humans ability to hold one on target, so find one you like and can afford.
I'm not being vulgar but thats like asking which one is better, blonds or  brunettes. It's a matter of personal preference.

I like Blondes myself!

Anysho, Try a Ruger MarkIIVT.  Check out the Ruger thread and see how many people are  turned to the Varmit/Target rifle.  All calibers shoot great.  My .308 shot so well, I bought my .243 in one as well.  The triggers are just fine.  And out of box, it is a great rifle.

Get one that fits and is fun.  Then shoot lots.

I keep hearing about the cheap Savage rifles but when I try to buy one it's in the 4 to 5 hundred range. I want the new Savage Combo in 25-06 and it's above $400.00. Where are the cheap versions?
