Non-corrosive ML powders?
« on: December 22, 2007, 08:14:23 AM »
I have been considering a new inline for use with non-corrosive powder. My original plan was to get a Savage designed for smokeless pistol powders. I have recently learned triple seven is non-corrosive and is used effectively in several inline rifles. Are there other non-corrosive powders currently available. Does 777 burn as clean as smokeless pistol powder? I am now considering a ml barrel for my Encore frame. Somebody help me!

Not sure if Jim Shockey's powder is non-corresive, but there are claiming 5,000 shots cleaned with one wet patch and two dry pathces.

777 is less corrosive than Pyrodex by a LONG shot but NOT non-corrosive.  I have no experience with the Shockey powder.  777 cleans up pretty easy but does not shoot nearly as cleanly as smokeless.  Slightly cleaner than Pyrodex.

I could not get the Shockey powder sticks or lose to shoot out of my encore. It is cleaner than T7 but not as accurate in my gun's
  Pyrodex is very dirty

If you want a non corrosive powder, better get the Savage.
A few years back BlackMag3 came out. In the BlackMag3 ads, they described this powder as "non corrosive."
I noticed that Cabelas, where I bought my BlackMag3, did not describe it as "non corrosive."
To test it out I fired one shot with my cap and ball revolver. I let it set for 2 weeks before I checked it. The cylinder and hammer were all rusted up! Thank God, I had run a couple patches down the barrel after I fired it.
It took me 3 hours to clean up that pistol and it is still not quite right.

777 and all the other black powder subs will cause rust if you don't clean up after shooting them.

I have fired the Savage, and let it set for a year without cleaning, no problem.

T7 is easy to clean with warm water and 3 patches. And then run some oil down the barrel. If you want to have very clean then use the savage and smokeless powder.

I have the cheapo Savage, blued with plastic stock. This thing hits deer like the Hammer of Thor!
I shoot the 250 SST. I got  1 1/2 inch groups right out of the box.
My 30-06 is gathering dust since I got the Savage.
Shoot your deer, and spend the morning skinning and quartering the deer, rather than cleaning your rifle.

I agree 100%.
I will never buy another muzzleloader that isn't capable of shooting smokeless powder. My Savage 10MLII is one of the first ones that came out and I have never regreted buying it.

Merry Christmas!

I am disappointed in my local gun shop people. The gun shop guy insisted that 777 was not corrosive at all. He also said the Savage model 10 was pointless because of that fact. So after being tipped off by you guys I looked at the Hodgen web site and they said it was corrosive. At another gun shop, Gander Mt, I was told the Savage Model 10 was not designed for smokeless powder and they had never heard of such a thing. :-\

Cheese,

If this Blackhorn 209 pans out, you will be able to shoot any 209 gun you want. I finally found something that these two have agreed about. But then again, whoever gets to be the poster boy for this one might not have to worry for a while. Sounds very promising, lets keep our fingers crossed. We should know more after the S.H.O.T. Show.

Busta,

Thanks for the links, VERY informative.

I have recently sold my TC 58 Big Boar and am wanting an inline. I will wait and see how this new powder proves it self

I am also interested to see how that powder works out. I would also look into the KP1 or the KRB if you are not able to get the Savage. They do not shoot smokeless though.

It figures - Just before the season ended I bought a new bottle of 777, a box of 777 pellets (hadn't tried pellets yet) and 3 boxes of 777 209 primers. That ran about $90.00. The Winchester powder will be out before I even open the 777 stuff. If  the Win powder is anywhere near  as good as the 2 reports listed, the 777 stuff will be looking for a new home.  ;D

Those reviews are very impressive. Maybe the stuff actually is non corrosive, that would be great!

Cheesehead, you will hear more bs at gunstores about the Savage, than you will hear truth.
If you do get a Savage, go over to the Savage forum to get the scoop, and don't believe anything you hear from a clerk at a gun store.

coop,

Ramshot is the division of Western Powders that will be responsible for distribution, as I understand from the e-mail I received from Western. They don't have any information on their site because it isn't going to be officially released until after the SHOT Show. You can go to the "Locate a Dealer" link on the web page to see who already handles their powder in your area. I'm thinking there will be no problem with distribution, it's going to be a problem for them to keep up with the demand. They have Ramshot and Accurate powder lines, KIK Black Powder and Montana X-Treme cleaning products.

At least now the other Companies that have been sandbaggin' will have to get off their arses and give them some competition.

This is exactly what I have been looking for. I have a 100 yard range out my back door, if this is the real deal, I can load up and shoot anytime I want and not have to schedule in the clean-up time with it. Just clean at your leisure.

Yep, it looks darn good to me.  Can't wait to try it.  Man, I just bought 3 cans of 777 FFg (I prefer FFFg) cause Wal-Mart had them marked down to $10 to clear out the ML stuff.  Well, at least I didn't pay full price for them if they end up as fire starters..... :D

Yup thats why I shoot so much. My range is 200 yards if I want but I hardly go past 125. Can't wait to try this power.

The good news is Natchezss sells the blued Savage for $429.
The bad news is Natchezss is completely out of stock of Savages.

Been using JSG FFG in my .50  Encore since i bought the gun in September of 06.  You can make JSG shoot well but one must work at it.  Forget using the sticks, too inconsistent.

1.  Use a very tight fitting sabot:  Yes, they are hard to load.   Pick out the one bullet you will use on game, i use the 250 grain SST.
2.  Weigh your powder charges.  110 weighed grains of JSG equals equals 100 measured grains of 777 in power.
3.  Really lean on the ramrod when seating the bullet over the powder, you can feel the powder compress.  Be consistent.
4.  Using the above techniques, my Encore shoots 1"- 1.25" three shot groups at 100 yards.

Maybe I do not need a Savage ml and should buy and Encore ml barrel for my Encore frame. Maybe! If this powder is as good as they say. If.
