bluffhunter has a savage barrel question?
« on: December 22, 2007, 09:15:08 AM »
Will a 340 savage barrel in 30-30 fit a stevens200/110 short action or long action? Not many 30-30 rifles built in a bolt action these days! Another ? did the striker come in 30-30? Someone point me in a direction to rebarrel a newer savage to 30-30 Winchester! Looking to build a hunting rifle not bench shooter Thanks Dale

No, the 340 barrel will not fit the 10/110/200 series

I think the case's rim makes this a pretty tough thing to do

If you can get one to feed, the only chalange would be getting a Savage bolt head opened up enough to clear the rim and getting an extractor to work.  I would say you could get it to work, a little machine work and a Remington 30 cal take off barrel and you could be in business.  A 30-30 rim is .506 and a 30-06 sized bolet head is set for a .373 cartridge.  There is enough bolt head rim to remove, and I would guess the extractor may have enough metal before the detent ball to remove to also work.  It would be a good science project.  Larry

You may want to contact the folks a Sharp Shooters Supply. They are Savage experts and sell lots of parts for them. They are also a gun smithing place for Savages. They have opened 223 size heads to 6mm PP. They also chamber rifle barrels as well as sell them. They may be able to do it for you or at least tell you if you can or not. Beware that the magazine may be the biggest obstacle to over come. You may have better luck finding a Remington 788 some where. They were not the best finished rifles in the world, but they shot very well. You could get them in 30-30 and 44 Mag with the usual 222, 223, 243, 308 among others. You might even be able to get a different 788 and buy parts to convert it over. Just some thoughts.

Last time this came up on Savage Shooters Fred said it couldn't be done. I don't know why , but he owns Sharp shooters and should know.
