32 inch brass scope for black powder 45-70
« on: December 22, 2007, 05:04:48 PM »

Hello out there

I have a very handsome 45-70 rifle built on a martini henry action and have been looking for an old time brass scope to mount on it.  Does anyone know if they are still made and sold.  I see the black matte ones from leatherwood but brass is what I want.  I would appreciate any information on this subject.

thanks

I have the Japanese made brass telescope from Dixie Gun Works.  I don't know if they are still available.  It uses external mounts and attaches to the barrel fore and aft like the Malcom type scopes.  I've seen them offered on Ebay in the last couple months.

The optics quality is only okay, in keeping with the primitive design of the late 1800's.

I think that for the price, I will stick with the Leatherwood.  The nitrogen filled tube works well.  The mounts are like the old 3/4'" target scope mounts. (Unertl)   But even those are not perfect and I need to modify my base to shoot much over 200 yards.

Hello to all

I see the leatherwood long black powder scopes are filled with nitrogen.  I understand the purpose of this but what happens when and if the nitrogen leaks out.  Does it affect the use of the scope and can it be replaced or put back in.  How important is it really?  The old timers could not  have used this gas in their scopes.  If it did leak out how would you work around it?

It is supposed to stop fogging inside the scope. (I believe)  If it leaks out, I will send it to the company to have it refilled.  But so far it hasn't and I don't expect it to.  Buffalo hunters worked their trade when they wanted to.  If the scope fogged up, they waited or dealt with it.  They had all the time they needed.  We don't.  The match ends if you are not ready to shoot, and hunting season is during the colder part of the year where the rifle spends some of the time inside a warm truck.
