Author Topic: ENCORE PISTOL 6.5X55 S.M. (Read 1618 times)

Here is a pic. of one of my Encore pistols. The barrel from FRO is 15" braked 6,5X55 Swede, with 3 forearm mounting holes so I can use rifle or pistol forearms on it. Scope is a Burris 2x7 set in a weaver base with 3 Leupy Verticle split rings. The grip is from Hornet Enterprise, I cut the finger grooves into it and did the finish. The forearm is a factory rifle style from Gunstocks Inc that I modified a little. I have taken several deer with this setup using Hornady's 129gr.SST bullets.

How is the accuracy of this gun? Is it like the others you've posted? I've been looking at the Swede in a rifle but now I'm thinking about it in an encore! How much do you give up in performance to have this round in an encore?

I have an Encore pistol in 6.5x55. It has a 12" Foxridge barrel. The max velocity with various reloads is at 2200 fps. Best accuracy is 5" at 200 yards. I like it.

I have never really gotten into serious load D for this one. I have hunting loads using IMR4350 and Hornady 129gr SST that will print 3 shot groups of 1" at 100yds. I do not use it for target shooting so I never have given it a real workout to see its full potential. As far as performance on deer, I have killed 3 with it, the longest shot being 126yds. All 3 deer were one shot kills, DOA.

I got behind on 6 holsters due to the Christmas Holiday.
Soon as I get caught up with those and DuraCoat 2500 pcs. of hardware, I plan on taking one day to get the fireforming done. Then load up a couple ramps and see what it will do.

I've had a fondness for the 6.5x55 cartridge for more years than I care to remember and currently have four rifles, three unaltered full military Swedish Mausers and a Remington Mdl. 700 Classic, in the chambering.

I have my fair share of pistol length Contender and Encore barrels that are setup for hunting so back in Aug. 2004 I purchased a new 15" Fox Ridge heavy (.850 o.d.) Encore barrel, without a brake or porting, in 6.5x55 that I wanted to use mainly for target shooting.

Using new unfired PMC brass...WLR primers...120gr Sierra HPBT Match bullets and 47.0grs of H4831SC 100yd. groups right at 1/2" are pretty common and clay piegons at 200yds. just don't stand a chance.

The 6.5x55 Swede is a wonderful cartridge Ike, and highly underrated in this country.
Glad you enjoy yours, someday I will have it in the Encore.

All the 6.5Cal's are under rated in this country!!!! I presently have in 6.5cal., a 6.5T/CU, 2-6.5JDJ's, 6.5X55S.M., 6.5X284Win.

I cant answer that question about the 6.5X55Swede as mine is braked and really has no recoil. My 6.5X284Win. using more powder than the Swede and 140gr. bullets is not bad at all. This is with a 16" heavy barrel.

Using my above load the most rounds I've fired through mine in one sitting is 40 while shooting through at IHMSA silhouette matches.....granted you know when the hammer falls but I certainly don't find the recoil to be punishing.

I shoot 7-08, 460/454 Casull/45 Colt,6.8 Rem,...........the 460 is the only one where I can't handle much of the recoil with my "arthur" wrists.

If you intend to use the 140 grain class vld's in 6.5 I would suggest a 1-8 twist.
An 8.5 would work, but if using it at longer ranges I would go 1-8

According to the TC info I have in front of me the twist rate on all 6.5 barrels from TC & Fox Ridge Outfitters is 1 in 8.....so in my case that would make my TC & FRO barrels in 6.5 TCU, 6.5x55 and 6.5x284 all 1 in 8's.

The barrel is a FRO barrel. to be honest I do not know the twist. Sorry

Recoil is more subjective and a personal thing.
I'll admit I shoot better with less of it. I have found however, and this again is my personal opinion, Grips like what Dave's or mine has on, fill the hand more and spread the recoil out. I had 30-40 AI with a tapered barrel and the factory synthetic grips. Loaded with 165's to near max., it wasn't a real joy to shoot and accuracy wasn't the best.
I switched to a wood grip, it was too large, so I fit it to my had using a dremel. It made all the difference in the world as far as recoil. Accuracy improved drastically too. I believe this is impart, the synthetics flex too much. They are narrow and don't fill the hand enough for my taste.
I'm sure Dave could fix you/anybody up with a wood grip that fits better than factory.
A good fitting grip, I feel is as important to accurate shooting ,,,and felt recoil reduction,,,as any other aspect.
Kinda like the difference between a church pew, and your favorite recliner. The preacher don't want you fall'n asleep, and a poor fitting grip, ain't goina let you shoot to your potential.
