need a bit of walnut
« on: December 23, 2007, 04:55:44 AM »
I'm wanting to make a manlicher forend for a Handi rifle but don't know of a source of wood. I only need a piece of straight grain walnut about 2"x2"x20", nothing fancy required. Where could I get such a bit of wood?

you should be able to order it from a local lumber yard or perhaps buy a scrap piece from a local cabinet maker, I suggest hitting the local phone book for cabinetmakers. Also re: the lumber yard, don't go to a big box store but a real lumber yard....<><....:)

The are many wood and specialty companies on the Internet. A catalog would could what you need. Also you might check the phone book for hard wood supply businesses. the local one has quite a selection and you can actually look at the wood before buying it.

Thanks guys, I will check local lumber yards but it's getting so it's hard to find even a good pine board these days. ;D  So much for Rush Limbaugh's assertion that we're not running out of wood, we've about totally run out of GOOD wood.

The good wood still exists, yuppies just won't let loggers cut it down.

I don't know if they're a national chain, but here in New England there's a chain called Woodworker's Warehouse (I believe they're online too) that sells mostly woodworking specialty tools - but they always have bins of many different woods in all sorts of sizes, at fairly reasonable prices.

I bought a 12" X 12" block of burl Claro Walnut there for $25 a few years ago, that I've been slabbing knife & handgun grips off of, since.

I am not sure if this is a viable solution anymore but for small sticks of wood like you are looking for, I used to ask the high school shop teacher.

Do high schools still teach shop?  If so, it won't hurt to ask.

Good Luck.

I think the stopped teaching shop in high school when they stopped "dodgeball" and "tag" being played in school yards and playgrounds. To much chance of someone either being hurt, physically or emotionally, or or feeling left out. I don't even know if they still teach home economics, cooking, or sewing in school. "They" may feel those subject are gender biased and possibly detrimental to the single sex/gendered society "they" are pressing for....<><.... >:(

When a buddy and I tried to enroll in high school home ec. as a gag we got a serious talking to, but they made it clear that if we really wanted to we could take that class, so in that instance at least, there was no gender bias. We should have taken it, I'm sure it would have been more useful to me than the shop class which was just a goof off session.

Hey thanks for all your help guys, I do appreciate it. I finally checked the lumberyard. Let me say, Salida Colorado still has a Real-Old-Time-Lumberyard.  I asked at the front counter and the guy said "check with the cabinet shop". The cabinet maker rummaged around a bit and came up with a nice two foot length of about 2x8" rough cut. He ripped it to 2x2 for me and when I carried it back to the front counter the guy said "no charge"!!! When I told him I was making a mannlicher forend for a singleshot rifle it led to quite a BS session, turns out he had just bought a 45/70 handi rifle and also had a T/C in 7mm08. ;D
