SRH 454 questions

I have two questions to you srh 454 owners first what  was your barrel length choice for hunting and why, did you go with the 7 1/2 or the 9 1/2 ? My other question is hjas anyone received recoil reduction with any form of mag na porting.It has been recommended to me to have the srh mag na ported with either the 4 port rifle porting or have them put on there muzzle bnrake for even more recoil reduction. Is it worth it and do they work?

I just have a 44 mag. but I had the magnabrake installed and there is definitely a reduction in felt recoil. I had the 9 1/2 inch barrel and they have to cut off some to thread the brake on. It ended up at the original length with the brake installed. Therefore the front sight has to come off. If you are scoping the gun you don't need it but I use open sights and had them reattach the front sight behind the brake. Sounds like a lot of work but it was definitely worth it for me. Also had them do a full action job while it was there and grind off the heinous looking safety warning.

I have the 7-1/2", and that is about as long as I care to have.  I carry it in an under arm body harness holster.  Any longer, and it would not be practical for me.  It shoots very accurately at 50 yards with Iron Sights, and very accurate at 100 yards with a scope on it.

Hello tanoose, The SRH is a large gun and I knew I was going to scope it so I went with the 9.5" barrel. I chose this length because I handload and felt that when I got to 1600 fps with a 300 grain bullet it would be at slightly less pressure than from the 7.5" barrel model. I also had David Clements do an action job, install a set of sling swivel studs that he made himself from stainless steel and I had him bead blast the gun to get rid of the Target Grey finish that I wasn't too fond of.
I haven't done anything as far as recoil reduction, I find that the weight of the gun with the 4x Leupold scope makes the gun manageable. I did try a Hogue rubber finger groove grip and did not like it due to it's small size and my large hands.

I had him bead blast the gun to get rid of the Target Grey finish that I wasn't too fond of.

That's one thing I would still like to have done. Mine is plain stainless and I really like the looks of the bead blasting.

I've got a 7.5in. 454. Any more gun, and it would feel like a carbine to me.   I got it primarily to shoot 45 Colt in, because I didn't need the power of a 454.  I like the tighter chamber, and the gun has been more accurate than other 45's I've had.  It came out of the factory with an excellent trigger, so the only other thing I've done is place a  Hogue grip on it.  I've evolved, though slowly, to shooting mostly full power 300gr. loads.  I've scoped it and had no problem with shooting quite a few rounds per session.  For some reason, the design of this gun really helps me to handle recoil well.  I think the Hogue grip must have alot to do with that.  The gun is very loud as it is, so I doubt I could tolerate the added noise from porting.

I went with the 9.5 for the longer sight plane since I was not going scope it.  I love mine...got my first handgun deer with it this year, but that is another story. IF you are going to scope I don't think it matters much.  I carry mine in an under the shoulder rig without any problems.  I think the longer barrel helps some with muzzle flip.

Have an SRH in 7 1/2" w/rifle type magnaport. I think it helps ~ each person is an individual and you may do well w/o the porting but I needed it. The Ruger badged hogue rubber grips that came w/mine helps a lot too. I've not shot the heavier 454 loads yet.

Been a rifleman most of my life and have a propensity for longish tubes only to regret it later. As I got involved w/revolvers recently, I struggle to resist this inherent tendancy for the extra long barrels. Even now, I find the 9 1/2" tubes tempting

A good set of muffs would definitely be nice w/any handgun but w/the mags it is essential. I plan on wearing mine when afield ~ don't have much hearing left and donwanna squander any more.

Thanks for all your input i was able to handle both barrel lengths and i went with the 7 1/2" , i bought it yesterday. Now i need a scope i am trying to buy back a leupold 2.5x8 i sold last year and if not i am looking at the 4x fixed leupold or the 2x7 burris electro dot or posi lock scopes. But i was wondering if the bushnell trophy or 3200 elite 2x6 scopes would hold up. Any suggestions on a good scope or which to stay away from.

I think that 2.5 would be perfect. I've always stayed away from higher magnification on a handgun. I had an adjustable simmons on my dan wesson 44 mag. and never turned it up from 3.

The SRH in .454 does have quite a bit of recoil. A good set of rubber grips will help alot and if you scope it that will also help alot. I have a 7 1/2 in. barrel with a 2x Leupold that I carry for a walk around deer gun and am very happy with it. I also did a trigger job on mine.

Kinda like I think and have done. Used S&W's and Rugers in .44 Mag for many years and thought I'd never need a bigger handgun. Bought the SRH in .454 on a lark and it's become my favorite. Can't believe the sweet trigger.

I put a 2x6 Trophy from bushnel on mine.  It was recommended from someone on this sight.  It has worked very well, and I could not be happier with the choice.
