Hello and Merry Christmas.   :D

Mossberg did make several firearms for retailers.  Some were labeled as Western Field (Mont. Ward), Revelation (Western Auto) and probably several others for local/regional retailers.

If I recall correctly, the 712 in question may be a derivative of the Savage 340 series.  This was a fine little bolt action that required a side mount for the scope due to not having an enclosed receiver.  I believe the .30-30 version is more popular.

I've seen one 340 in .222 and it was a very nice example.  It had a much fancier stock than the typical 340 and what appeared to be a longer than usual barrel. The finish was a nice deep blue, as well.

You may want to make an inquiry over at the Savage forum for more info.  There has been some discussion on the 340 series from time to time.

  :)

EDIT:  After writing this response, I moved to the Savage forum and saw that there is a current topic regarding the Savage 340 series in .222.  Another member confirms the 712 as a version of the 340.

EVOC ONE - Thank You !  That's what I thought also, I did forget to mention that it does have a side mounted scope mount
too, I seen it at a local gun shop and they must have had it a long time so they have reduced the price to $ 125.00 it's in pretty nice shape and at that price I will go get it for a winter project. I really don't need anymore rifles but this looks like it will be fun to play with and I do like 222 's.         Jedman

Your welcome. I too would jump all over that deal.

From what I've read over the years on the 340 series rifles, the .222's turn up now and again, but are desired among the Model 340 fans.  Also, the .222 is easy on barrels which lead to little risk in buying such an aged rifle as, say, a 220 Swift or .22-250.

Good Luck and Enjoy.

Please post some pic's when you can.

 ;)

Well.....He who hesitates.. you know,  I went to get the gun today and it was sold.  I seen it on Christmas eve. and should have bought it then but wanted to know a little more about it first. This isn't the first time that this has happened !

Well, I've done that before myself.    :'(

My wife always says, "If it was meant to be, then it would have been there when you went back".   ;)

At least you can look for something else to spend that money on.   ;D
