Barrels you didn't like.
« on: June 26, 2003, 12:51:46 AM »
Someone once said that an optimist sees the glass half full while the pessimist sees the glass half empty. I see it as why bother because someone will spill it anyways.

So on that cheery note, what barrels have you owned or still do that you really don't care for? I had a 35 Remington carbine barrel that I thought would make a great deer barrel. I was using handloads and forgot to take in consideration the issue of headspace with that short neck. Well, I had a nice doe cross my path right in front of me at 30 paces. Wow. What a shot. Why don't you say,"Hey big boy just shoot me". Well, needless to say the gun misfired. Needless to say I got rid of that barrel and used the good old 45-70 from then on. No more misfires.

So, what is your least favorite barrel?

I see the glass as neither half full nor half empty.  The glass is simply too big.

My least favorite barrel of all time has to be a factory Encore 26" barrel in .223 Rem I bought shortly after I purchased my frame.  Despite trying every powder and bullet combination under the sun, the darn thing just wouldn't shoot well.  I sold it and moved on.

I wasn't particularly fond of the .223 Rem. barrel I have for my Contender at first.  The muzzle brake bothered my sinus cavities.  Last time I had it out, though, the load I was shooting was accurate and not as bad coming through the muzzle brake.

7TCU

I have a 10" 7TCU that I like mostly for the short barrel, but can't seem to get a nice dense group with.  So I picked up a 10" 357Max and my groups came together right away.  I like the shorter barrel for deer hunting in brush areas.  So if I had to choose amongst my collection, I'd have to go with the 7TCU.

Straight 45LC barrel.  Tried and tried to get that thing to group to my satisfaction and never could.  Bye, bye 45LC barrel.

i only shot it a few times and it shot very well the problem was the muzzel tammer made it so much louder you would lose you hearing if you did not wear hearing protection ,,wich i do but when hunting i don't

I had a beautiful 10" Blued .256 Winchester. I really thought that barrel and caliber were going to bring some nice days plinking at the range. That was until I tried to reload that round. I used lyman dies, and it would bottom out againt the shellholder before the case was sized properly. You had to slam the barrel to close the action! So I ordered a new set of Hornady dies. Same problem! Ended up selling that barrel! Who needs that kind of aggravation! Anybody know what I was doing wrong?

Maybe you were doing nothing wrong; maybe the chamber was cut with a badly worn reamer and undersize.  That would be unusual for T/C in my experience. I've owned several .256 barrels and still own most of them, and I've never run across one with too tight/short a chamber.  Just the reverse is usually the case, and I've had to be careful not to over size the cases or I'd get very short case life.

Thanks RonF, It wasn't the barrel chamber. I had six unfired factory rounds that chambered just fine. I took the decapper pin out of the lyman die, and took off about 1/16" with a grinder. Then I could size them so the action would close like it should. The trim to length was OK. When the time came to seat a new bullet, the case on most of them buckled rather than accept a new bullet! I've done a lot of reloading, even a wildcat or two, but I never had the kind of trouble that I experienced that day! I shouldn't have sold that barrel, but I was pretty frustrated with the whole thing!

Worst barrel was  14 inch hunter 44 mag with a .436 bore diameter!!!!  Shot patterns at 100 yards and about one in five bullets keyholed...don't even think about cast bullets.  Great tent peg....traded off long ago, with proper warning to trading party.  Still want a 44 mag barrel, but not one made by TC.  Anyone got one for sale out there?

Least favorite.........44 mag contender 10 inch octagon.  Just too light.  Too much muzzle flip.  No fun for me.  I like the round, maybe I'll run across a 10 inch bull for the right money one day.

The question is not if the glass is half empty, or half full, or even if it is too big. The question is "WHO LEFT THAT GLASS IN THE LIVING ROOM?"
As far as barrels I've disliked; now that I'm hooked on the shortys, anything over 10" :D .>>>>>>>Bug.

10" octagonal 44 Mag.  It would bruise the palm of your hand with a rubber grip.  300gr loads?  Once.
