Mueller APV 4.5–14×40 AO for a .17 HMR
« on: December 25, 2007, 11:43:23 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with this scope on a .17 HMR?  I'm looking for a little more magnification than my 3-9X40 Bushnell Sharpshooter that is now on it.  Is the range adjuster on the front end of the scope actually used that much?

Great scope for the money, crosshairs a tad heavy for my taste, but overall I'm happy, and don't plan to change it out from my 17HMR.

I'll have to agree with poncaguy and sidekick.  I have the APV on my Savage also and it shoots dime sized groups with the 20gr ammo.  The crosshairs are a bit heavier than I would like,, but thinner reticles cost alot more money too. I would compare the APV glass real close if not equal to my Nikon Buckmaster at less than half the cost.

A perfect scope for the hummer, and I'd like thinner cross hairs too.  The Mueller really is as good as most in terms of the cross hairs - not to say that they are unusually thick, it's just that with such an accurate cartridge and such good accuracy from the rifles that we have, it would be nice to have more precise reticles.  It does go with the price bracket though, and these APV's are really outstanding and comparable to more expensive scopes.

14X or better on a 17hmr, you betcha!! ;)  I have four 17hmrs, they wear 4-16x, 6-18x and a couple 6-20x. The APV was developed as a replacement for the discontinued Simmons ATV, one of the most popular rimfire scopes at RFC.

The Mrs. bought me a APV 4.5-14x40 AO for CHRISTmas ;D, i've read good things about it, mainly .17 & .22 cal related.  My question is: Will this scope stand up to a .270 consistantly?  I've have my concerns and would rather not damage it from the recoil,  i'm thinking shooting 250-350 yds out.  If it's not a suitable scope I just as soon put it on the Marlin 783.  Your thoughts??  Mr fixit

I have one on a Mosin Nagant 91/30 that has very brutal recoil compared to the 270. The 203 grainers hurt.... It's not in the magnum bracket but close.  I've shot 100 rounds and no problems so far.  I even ask the guys at Mueller a while back, they said it would work.  Go for it!

30-30man, I appreciate the input, any body else have anything to offer? I didi e-mail Mueller optics some time ago, although I never got a reply, I also see they have the scope listed under the big game listing but not for heavy magnum rifles.  Just curious ya know!!  Mr fixit
