22 Hornet & Heavy Bullets ?
« on: December 26, 2007, 10:47:51 AM »
Members:  Has anyone tried using heavier bullets in their 22 Hornets?  Given that the Hornet barrel has a relatively fast (for a Hornet) 1 in 12" twist, I was wondering if, say, 55 grain and heavier bullets will stabilize out of it. Just curious - thanks in advance.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

I've got a 1 in 12 twist on my 223.  It will stabilize up to a 60gr bullet.  let me be accurate......  it shoots 3" groups without a keyhole at 200 yards.  I do not know what it does after 200 yards.  Let me know how you make out.  I'm not getting good accuracy with my Handy.  1.5 MOA  I've tried everything and actually after 6 weeks i give up.  8 different bullets, 4 different powders and 2 different primers.  And hundreds of combinations of the mix.

Good luck

Anything but Hornet bullets will not expand well on game. Even 40 gr Nosler BT's just drill holes at 100+ yards.

My Handi Hornet likes 45gr Sierra Varminter Hornet bullets and 12 grains of Lil' Gun.
Out to 150 yards it hits what I aim at. Haven't tried in on any critters yet, but I'm
pretty sure any small game out to 150 yards that would be so unlucky to be in the
path of one of those little cruise missiles would have a real bad day. ;D

I don't know about 55 but 50's work well in my k-hornet and with lil'gun there is only about 100-150 fps difference, but you need to use the right bullet. The two heads I have tried are the 50 sierra blitz and 50 Hornady spsx, I just tried the spsx and they seem softer, used it on some finishers on coyotes last week had no exits so there had to be decent expansion.

You should be able to get 2700 fps with lil'gun and a 50 grain head I don't know th max speed for the seirra head but if memory serves the hornady is 3300fps.

McLernon  a while back I think plain ol' bill posted that after talking to the techs , the 40 gr Sierra is the softest he was noting that most of the other 40's are designed to handle 4000 fps so jackets are pretty tough.
