Marlin introduced "the first lever action .35 Remington", in 1950, in both the 20" 336SC and the 24" 336A rifle.

Here's a period ad, from sleazebay:  http://cgi.ebay.com/V383-1950-MARLIN-35-CAL-SPORTING-CARBINE-RIFLE-AD_W0QQitemZ160161850337QQcmdZViewItem

You might want to look a that link a little more carefully.

The ad is a page from a period Field and Stream magazine; the SC price was $76.95; and the prices for the SC and A  suggested are RETAIL from "your local Marlin Dealer".
The dealer cost would have been somewhat lower.

That easily translates to over $750+  in 2007 dollars - making the new Marlin XLR's a bargain at $650.

[that was a sweet deal even in those times ]

As I remember from my youth, that $80 represented about 2 weeks pay, for the average working stiff.

Doable, but not "sweet", IMHO.  :)

How many firearms do we buy now, that we give two weeks wages for ?   ::)

When I retired three years ago, I was earning a little under $2K per week, and I didn't/don't have any guns I paid $3,500.00- $4,000.00 for; but even for someone earning $600/week, $1200 guns don't come easy - unless you don't eat, use fuel, or something.
