Guide Gun Scope options
« on: December 27, 2007, 03:49:18 PM »
Hey Guys,

I have a Guide Gun in .450 Marlin that I would like to scope with a good, low-power variable to take advantage of low-light, and Lever-Evolution ammo. I am torn between the Scout set-up or a conventional mounting system. I don't want to get smacked in the forehead!  What are your experiences and thoughts?

Thanks,

K.K.

I have a 444 setup with the scout.  200 yards is no problem and for a woods gun I find it very nice.  Took a 10 point with it last year.  The scope is the Leupold scout scope and the XPS (i think) Scout system.

It's hard to beat the Bushnell Banner for the money.

I think you give up a bit of the light gathering with the scout setup compared to a traditional scope

you really just about have to try it to see if you like it
one cool thing on the guide gun and 336 is the option of a single long rail from AO that will allow you to run either setup

I just put a Leopold Vx1 shotgun 1-4 heavy duplex scope on my Win 444
a big scope just seems out of place and the 1-4 is great, very small and light and the parallax is set at 75 yards, perfect for this application
at 1x it seems like it's really 1x, some 1x scopes I have tried actually made the image look small and farther away

if you get a decent deal on the scope you won't lose but maybe 50 bucks if you decide you don't like it...

Thanks Guys,

I have the AO Ghost ring sights on her now, and they are fine, but don't offer the presicion that I am after (at least for my eyes). Is the Bushnell listed above a conventional mount or scou?. And for the Leopold Scout scope, what is the model? I have looked but cannot get a model number on a Leopold scout scope.  THanks again

scout scopes are a neat fast package but do give up some light gathering. Id probably go with a low powered variable like a 1.5x4.5 bushnell or a 1x4 leupold.

If you're gonna go with a scout setup, here's the Leupold: http://www.swfa.com/pc-3642-94-leupold-25x28-fx-ii-scout-scope.aspx

If you go conventional, I recommend a Weaver V-3 Classic 1-3x20 - brighter for $130 less $$$:

Take a look at the Burris "Short Magnum" 2X7 scopes.  Cabelas has them on sale right now.  I have one on my .450 and it works great.  It is light and compact, mounts in the conventional manner and has plenty of eye relief -- more than 4 inches.  It's a very tough and rugged scope, the recoil of the .450 does not bother it at all.  Good quality for the price too.  Rev

P.S. another vote for the Bushnell Banner too.  I have one on my .45/70 which I like a lot, although it does not have quite as much eye relief as the Burris.  Rev

i just picked up one of those weavers used and im very impressed with it. I think its one of the best bangs for the buck in a low powered variable on the market. very good optics. Another good one has been mentioned here and is becomming a very popular scope is the 1.5x4.5 bushnell banner. It has optics that rival scopes twice its price.

Jon,

That Weaver is a nice little scope, very clear, made in Japan, I have one on my 45 Colt Carbine. The only problem I see with it for the .450M is the eye relief is a bit short, I think 3½" would be the minimum I'd want to use. An alternative would be the K2.5x20, very similar to the 1-3x, has 4" of eye relief, but it's not available in matte.

Dang sure I saved this little Weaver for a rainy day... we will see how it does on the GG before moving on in another direction.
